    Question about mask testing

Okay, those of you with good memories will remember that I was looking for a new sabre mask a while back. I got one and donated my old one to my girlfriend. I'm getting her ready for the Pomme de Terre in June, but she wants to know if the mask I gave her will pass inspection. It's a JL mask, and the only thing wrong with it is that it's missing one rivet on one of the sideplates. Will it still pass, or does it need to be fixed, or will she need a new one altogether?

Well, the big things are does it pass a punch test and is it conductive below 5 ohms? You'll needs a punch tester for the first one, and some sort of ohm-meter for the second.

The rivet should only be a problem if there is something that looks like it's falling apart, or looks like it could catch a point.

Well, unless Febreeze makes it lose conductivity and weakens the mesh, it should still be fine for those since that's the only thing she's done to it differently since January. Thanks.

I would say missing a rivet would probably be a big problem. What is there now with the rivet gone? Most likely a hole. If there is a hole, the mask punch will drop right through. This is not the end of a mask. There are several solutions. You could rerivet the hole or fill the hole with a screw or bolt and a nut. Just make sure to cut it flat.

A missing rivet is cause to fail a mask, for just the reason that Donald stated: there's a hole in the mesh where the rivet was. This is a rather common problem, though, and easily fixed using a pop rivet. If you don't have a pop riveter, you can get a cheap one that'll be perfectly adequate for personal use for about $15 from any hardware store. You'll need to get the right diameter and grip-length rivet for the hole, and it's a good idea to use washers as backing for the rivet.
