Looking for a sword Hi all,
I am looking for a smallsword, I heard that coldsteel offer some but I doubt
about the quality of the product. I never purchased anything on the net as I
don't really thrust what I havn't had the chance to see for myself. And
where I am from it's very hard to find a sword that has better to do than
hanging on a wall and not staring to much in case it breaks. I am not really
knowledgable about quality products as I havn't the chance to hold many
quality swords. I hope someone can help me. -

I think "thrust" is a typo, but I still like it. <g>

How much money do you have, and what do you want to do with the sword?
If you want to fence with it, then get one made for that, which means
usually a double-wide epee with smallsword furniture.
You could email Maestro Ramon Martinez
(http://www.martinez-destreza.com) and ask what he uses to teach
smallsword. There's also links to suppliers there, you can find what
they've got.
As far as makers go, if you can't afford custom, then you can't really
go wrong with Del Tin. Hanwei/PaulChen has got a lot better in the last
couple of years, and is considerably cheaper than Del Tin. I think
Darkwood have some early smallsword furniture, and you could mount it on
one of the short Del Tin rapier blades for something reasonably close to
late 16thC early 17th smallsword.

Boils down to money. Cold Steel, people like that, they are doing mass
produced wall hangers.
You want good, you pay for it... http://www.deltin.it/ does a French smallsword, http://www.myarmoury.com/reviews.html might be helpful
You should probably also ask in the appropriate forum at www.swordforum.com

I can't determine if you are wanting an antique or
modern. If you want the real thing then here is a URL http://www.wilkinson-swords.co.uk/
These are military and while intended for show are
fine quality weapons. I have an older one (prior to WWI
vintage). In a moment of idiocy I took it and bent it
double (not recommended practice), released it and
it sprung out straight as ever.
I paid a little over US $100. for the one I have. And I
believe you can still find them in the UK in various states
of maintenance. Point is that they are still manufactured
to the highest standards just as if they were to be used.
But as a fencer they are "heavy" weapons suitable for young
manly military types. And with advancing years I prefer an epee.

THAT IS JUST TOO FUNNY!!!
US $44.95 was that the price?? And it comes
with a lifetime warranty. Whose lifetime?
Certainly not the buyer's.
Took viewing a couple of times to see the
details. Wish the guy hadn't hidden behind
the counter. Be curious to know if he ever
banged weapons on the counter top like that again.
Especially "cheap" ones.

Perhaps they're counting on the buyers trying that too. LOL!
