    New Hand signals

Question for all the referees out there:

Have you seen a web page that describes the new hand signals?? I'd like to see them for myself...

    thanks

Check out the Fencing Officials Homepage at

I was in the site a few minutes ago and the links were not working. Might be under construction.

The FIE site has the new gestures in two PDF files. They are in French.

Veeco, can you give us a precise translation after you read them?

I think the new ones are on the second page, I had seen the first ones before and they don't seem to have changed.

The second page contains more signs for other actions.

So starting from the first sentence on the top left of the sheet.

    "Both fencers hit"
    "One point for both fencers"
    "Simultaneous attacks"
    "No point and no warnings"
"Attack from the fencer on the right, which is too short and doesn't hit" (that would be a missed attack).
"Incorrect attack or incorrect reposte from the fencer on the right"
And the last one is to card the fencer. Note that the referee is using his right hand to card the fencer on the right but should use his left hand to card the fencer on the left.

    The last remarks are:

    1) The ref analyzes and gives his decisions using only the words and signs above
    2) Depending on the phrase, the ref could use the following words without signs: "Riposte", "Contre-riposte", "Remise", "Reprise" or "Redoublement".
    3) The fencers may ask courteously to the referee to give a more thourough analysis of the phrase.
    4) Every sign should have a duration of 1 - 2 seconds, be expressive and correctly executed. Here they are all done for the fencer to the right of the ref.

What does "non valable" mean, versus what I'm most used to, "non valid"?
