Single-Stick in Scotland!

Hello All

I'm seeking out Veteran sinbgle-stickers and anyone in the
Glasgow/West Coast of Scotland with an interest in Single-Stick....
Veterans or new gamesters!

I am based in the Greenock area, participated in last years
single-stick competition at Milingavie Highland Games and hope to take
part at this year's venue at Abernethy.

What does single stick have to do with fencing? What IS Singel Stick
anyways.. is that recent Scots slang for Golf or something?

yeha, you usually need more than one stick to make a fence.

Singlestick is backsword with sticks. A precursor to sabre if you like,
although more like mensur. Traditionally you both have a stick with a
stiff leather basket hilt to protect your hand, and cut at each other's
bare heads. The first one to bleed loses...

I dunno if they go that far at the highland games, but bet it would draw
the crowds if they did!

The single-stick competitions have been hosted by Edinburgh's
Macdonald Academy
and refereed by Maestro Paul Macdonald. The last time the event was
held at a Highland Game in Scotland was over 80 years ago.

Participants use wicker or leather hilts with ash sticks, which
represent broadswords...
We no longer try for 'first blood' as the fencing mask prevents solid
blows reaching the skull, but Elbow & knee pads and a groin guard are
useful.

There have also been a number of successful events held at Highland
games in the US!
