Zurich's Fencing Action

I have moved to Zurich a couple of years ago but find fencing opportunities
limited. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places.
Can anyone help me navigate through Zurich's fencing scene (i.e. coaches,
clubs, local and national circuits)?
Thanks
Matthias

Hello, Matthias

I don't know where you moved from, so I don't know what you're comparing
Zurich with to conclude that the opportunities are limited. I've only fenced
in Switzerland, so I have little awareness of how things really are in, say,
the U.S.A. When I lived in the States I wasn't involved in the sport, so
fencing was just that sport I'd seen on TV a couple of times where the
players wore all white outfits and carried some kind of whippy sticks.

In Zurich itself are at least four clubs, each with Web sites:

Akademischer Fechtclub Zürich
Fechtclub Zürich Nord
Société d'Escrime de Zürich
Zürcher Fechtclub

and nearby Winterthur also has a club (Winterthurer Fechtclub). I can't tell
you anything about Winterthur's club beyond what's on their Web site. They
don't mention who leads training sessions there, and I don't know.
Zürcher Fechtclub has two good trainers, both mentioned on their site. A lot
of Switzerland's top fencers show up there on Tuesday nights. I haven't been
to Zürich Nord in years, but I think it's safe to say they're a little more
easygoing than Zürcher Fechtclub. SEZ used to have the same trainer as
Zürich Nord, but I see his name missing from both sites, so I don't know
what to tell you there. The Akademischer Fechtclub has a good mix of
high-level and lower level fencers.

I train at Zuger Fechtclub in Zug, which is farther south than you probably
want to travel, but we have a friendly atmosphere and three main trainers so
you might want to visit us sometime. Our Web site is at
http://www.ZugerFechtclub.ch, where you can find out more about us as well
as find links (click on "Links"...) to the most all the other clubs in
Switzerland. (I'm trying to rework the site, so it's a bit of a mess at the
moment, but links should all work...)

The sites I mentioned are all in German, but since you're living here,
you're probably able to handle the language. The big difficulty in answering
you is knowing exactly what you're looking for. Are you a beginner?
Top-class fencer? Looking for challenging tournaments or just want to stay
fit and socialize a bit at the same time?
