Ahh, the start of a new season...

.... and the return of old bad habits :-)

This past weekend I jump-started my fencing season with a tournament,
after taking the summer and early fall off after Nationals. As usual,
I've lost the polish that I had at the end of the summer, and several
old bad habits that I'd managed to subdue last season are back.

Somehow, though, I'm much more philosophical about it this year. Sure, I
kicked myself when I kept doing that %&^$%! move of searching for the
blade when there's no blade there... yet I also found myself thinking
"Well, I settled that problem pretty well by the end of the season last
year; I'll just have to get down to squashing it again right away."

I also found myself continuing to do some of my *good* habits that I'd
established over the past year. Progress, I dare say!

I guess it just clicked that yes, my performance goes in cycles, that
it's natural, and that this cycle is something that I can manage and
that can trend upward over time.

How are other peoples' seasons starting out? Or do most folks fence all
through the summer? I find that the summer break recharges me, somehow.

Well, if the blade was there, you wouldn't have to search for it, would
you? :-)

Yeah, but it helps if the blade is somewhere in the same zip code, at
least... even better if it's not occupied by hitting *me* at the same
time. ;-p

I thought the object of fencing was to hit your opponent, not their
blade. Pesky disengages...
