It may be that when you lunge your back foot is rolling over; if you go for a long lunge, try to let your back foot slide along instead, so it will not only do less damage to your ankle/shoe, but will also be quicker to recover from. If your back ankle is too relaxed, the foot will roll over to the side, so as well as concentrating on shorter lunges, try to concentrate on the technique itself.
Also, what shoes do you wear whilst fencing? More advanced (and expensive...) fencing shoes will be specially designed for these kind of movements, and as such will have more grip and support where needed. So, if you haven't already, it may be a good idea to invest in a good pair of proper fencing shoes. -

Array Since I have wide feet, I must use court shoes (when I can find them wide). My chronic problem is that my right big toe tends to jam into the front of the shoe, which plays havoc on my big toe nail. To rectify this, I profide more cushion by cutting a strip of old mouse pad, approximately 1/2 x 3 inches and position it at the very front of the shoe, in a vertical fashion, so at least my toe jams into something that's cushioning... works well. Also take out manufacturer's insole and replace it with gel inserts.
BTW: old mouse pads also work well as bell guard pads. "...whatever happened to peace, love and understanding?" -

I have a feeling that you all have made the correct diagnosis but i'll have to try it out at practice tonight.
Thanks for all the help A setback is just a set up for a comeback -

Array In my opinion, a good shoe fencing shoe is a tight fencing shoe. It should apply pressure in every direction, so that your foot cannot shift at all within the shoe. This allows for the fastest footwork and direction changes. It helps you really feel the strip. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. And from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moment, lost in time. Gone, like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die" -Phil Ken Sebben -
