Indeed.

As an aside, I wonder at the unabashed admiration for FDR, who after all signed the order sanctioning the Japanese-American internment camps, one of the more disgraceful acts in recent history IMO...

I think that's a good point, but I also can't think of a President who didn't have some MAJOR mistakes and bad decisions throughout his term. Washington might be one example; I can't think of any truly major mistakes he made, but that might just be from a lack of knowledge on my part.

Funny that you forgive FDR with "everybody makes some pretty major mistakes", yet Bush is still evil incarnate...

I think that that isn't exactly a fair comment, although I see where you're coming from. I was trying to point out that FDR's other actions were the mark of a good President, and we should keep his leadership ability as the example of a good President, even though he did make a major mistake during his term.

If I was a religious Republican, I would probably feel the same way about Bush. I do admit that Bush has alot to be admired. He has a dream for America, and he is going to stand by that dream for all 8 years of his term until it is realized. He's even willing to take action to accomplish what he feels is right. Unfortunately, I'm not a religious republican, and I think that Bush's dream isn't doing anything good for America, and that furthermore, he's doing it without the consent of 49 point whatever percent of the population.

FDR did some good things, mostly in changing policies to get the US out the depression, but some of his other policies really raise my eyebrows. For example, people forget he tried to change the constitution so he could appoint up to 6 more additional Supreme Court justices and 50 new additional lower-court Federal judges, because the Supreme Court was ruling against several of his proposed new programs, and specific implementaiton were being overturned in the Federal courts.

I think FDR was a good president for the time (to come out of the great depression), but he rather cynically spoke out publicly against the US entering into the global war, while secretly making agreements and issuing orders for the US military to support one side. And some of the policies put into place for the great depression and are not necessarily those that might be wanted when not in a recession/ depression.

That's why I wouldn't put him in the top 2 or 3 presidents.
