Canadian women’s epee fencing team defeats France for fifth at Würth Cup
Tauberbischofsheim, Germany – The Canadian women’s epee team got sweet revenge on 2nd ranked France with an exciting 45-44 OT victory to finish fifth at the Würth Cup Sunday.
Many may remember the last time these two countries met up at the Athens Olympic Games in the heated bronze medal match which France won 45-37. Canada had never defeated France…until today.
On road to their best performance of the year thus far, Canada defeated Poland 45-43 in the round of 16. Canada’s only blemish then came in the form of a 45-43 heart-breaker loss to Romania in the quarter-finals. They managed to regain their composure and beat Estonia 30-25 which set up the rematch for fifth spot.

Sherraine MacKay from Brooks, Alta., Monique Kavelaars of Appin, Ont., Montreal’s Julie Leprohon and Catherine Dunnette of Calgary, Alta.
Host country, Germany won the gold medal with a 45-35 victory over Hungary while Ukraine captured the bronze besting Romania 45-34.
