Let's get something straight here...

Alright. I've had quite enough. I don't know if you guys always act like this to newcomers, or just to me. No matter how nicely I word things or give advice based on my own opinion, I get shot down in the exact manner I'm told won't make me many friends.

Let's start at the top. My first post, my opinions on modern fencing. Admittingly, it wasn't a very intellectual post. Then comes Stryder, who immediately sinks below my level in pounces on me like a rabid animal. The result? I'm the one attacked, and Stryder, being a modern fencer, is heartily agreed with, regardless how much of an *** he makes of himself.

So then I apologize, and vow to give advice based on my own opinions, and not to state them as facts. Aparently, no one takes time to read my post, because the stream of nonsense and crap continues.

Then Lordy makes not one, not two, but three extremely arrogant posts, and shows he has no respect whatsoever, and postes in a manner like I did in my first post. Like everything he says is a fact. Except I apologized. So then I tell him to try things before talking trash about them.

The result? Lordy STILL gets support from everyone. D'Artagnan says that HE'S on the right track, and I should be less arrogant! Did I miss something?

Now lets move on to the 'Foot loose' topic. I post my views, and very well state that it's my opinion, and, like before, I'm shot down. Then Veeco gives me advice telling me exactly what I was already doing, stating my opinions as opinions, not as facts.

Then last, but not least, GreyGhost's question about parries. My advice was to keep your blade in the center, instead of any particular body line. Edew makes a considerably rude comment...

[quote]Please, don't follow the advice above.

...and everything's starting over again. Once again, I post my opinions as opinions, and now, I'm getting nonsense from two people. Chris, obviously a follower and considers techniques good because so called "champions" use them, instead of from his own experience. Then, as usual, D'Artagnan is yet AGAIN telling me to post my opinions as opinions, not as facts.

This is getting very frusterating. People are still giving me crap even after following their advice. Of course, some of you have been rather kind to me in PMs, so my thanks to them. Otherwise, unless anyone can convince me not to, I'm leaving.

Hold on there -- it is not rude to tell someone not to follow advice. It is merely a disagreement. You gave advice that he thought was bad advice, he told the person you gave advice to that it was bad advice. You may be tempted to think that everyone who disagrees with you is being disagreeable, but it is not so.

Look, if you told someone to go ahead a drink rat poison while playing with a live cobra, I think it's perfectly acceptable to interject with, "Please, don't do what this guy said."

Is it rude to give good advice over bad? Should I have said something like, "yeah, go ahead, put your blade in the middle." (Personally, I'd love to give bad advice to as many people as I can, only so that when I'm fencing them...but I think there's enough people here to recognize bad advice over good, and then my sterling reputation may be compromised...
)

Don't look to me to convince you not to leave. I'll leave that to others, and ultimately, you.

Fencing is a competitive sport, and when you get a bunch of fencers in a room, they will all give each other competitive waves. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Not neccesarily, but had I said that, everyone would be all over me.

Don't worry Edew, I still love you :-*

Hey, maybe it's your split personality! I mean, you did register as two people after all...

Seriously, I have no problem with you or your posts, myself. As to those who have, well, some are just prickly characters in general ( you know who you are! )...and anyway it's all to easy to be taken the wrong way on the internet, as I'm sure you've noticed. Which is why it's always best to dip your toes into the water carefully at first---'cause as the proverb goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. You just jumped in a bit too exuberantly at first, I think, when no one "knew you" yet.

But ultimately, bulletin boards are not for the thin-skinned. Even the mildest person will rub someone the wrong way sooner or later---usually sooner. You just need to invest in a Nomex suit and learn to give as good as you get...

And then finally, sometimes, it's better to learn to keep your virtual mouth shut if you are unsure of something. No personal attack here, I have learned it the hard way myself.

I found that there is always someone on the Internet who knows better about any particular subject than you do. That's why bbs are great, you can learn a lot from them.

But unfortunately, there are also people who only think they know better than you and not only state their opinions as fact, but offend/tick off many people in the process.... At risk of offending a friend, I can't defend Lordy here... It's one thing to debate an issue civilly, and another thing to disregard/disrespect other people's views while you go on opinionated rants; however, insulting people personally b/c you disagree w/ them is completely out of line. Maybe I should mind my own business and stop trying to play the peacemaker, but it seems like this entire bbs has turned into a giant brawl lately... <sigh>
My usual signature file would read "'I've had just about enough of your Vassar-bashing, young lady.' -Homer Simpson" -- I think in this case it is something more like, "we've had just about enough of your Bebop bashing, young man from Vassar"

Dear Bebop,
I really understand what you are talking about dear because I got a HUGE LOAD OF CRAP for saying that I thought fencing would catch on as a sport in the Olymics and that TV would be the vehicle.

Is that not a tacky and horrid thing to say? Oh my gawd I should be stoned!!!
When I did not agree that Americans would watch tv shows about Russian Fencers,Gav called me a xenophobe or a trogladyte or some other snarky thing and then had the pure AUDACITY to critize my spelling of the word "Kewl" even though I think I spell it in a very kewl manner.
You know gurl (another spelling to piss off Gav) some people are just not happy unless they are giving other people a big pile of nasty stuff. The heck with them.
Read on and post on young person!! Have fun and if someone gives you a hard time, pray they wash their fencing whites with strange color stuff and so they look like smurfs or other weird creatures on the strip.

There are many different guards and parrying systems that correspond with them. Why be inflexible and say you must choose one or the other? The best guard is the one your particular opponent has the most difficulty with isn't it?

Veeco,
Dear, you really need to figure out the difference between bitterness and sarcastic humor. Comforting another with similar experiences does not indicate bitterness but an attempt at humor to smooth over a situation.
Crazy Wacker,
I think it is fun to spell "kewl" and "gurl" like that too but it annoys the crap outta Gav so use it frequently in your posts K?

I found what what Bebop and Rocksteady are from. They are two henchmen from the old cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. When I was 11, I stopped watching the Turtles, perhaps you should as well. At least don't tell the world you still watch the Turtles.

I wouldn't admit to watching Man in the Iron Mask more than once, but taste varies.

Hey, considering the fact everyone here plays with swords every chance they get, watching TMNT isn't that far off the deep end.

Besides I got a fondess in heart for those 2 lugs.

snigger snigger.

Well, at the time I didn't realize what crap I was watching.

Once I finished the books, I was completely appalled at the pathetic attempt to recreate the story.

Now now, just because we play with swords doesn't mean we are nuts. I am sure that each and every one of us looks at fencing as a scientific art that involves a great deal of thinking. I for one do not consider what I do to be fantiscising. I am learning an art.

Heck, I'm seriously considering buying the full DVD set of Star Trek--The Next Generation even though I taped every episode from all seasons. And I re-read a small selection of children's books every few years or so.

Nobody said I had to grow up.

Well, that's not true. People said it to me frequently. They've just sort of given up in the last couple of decades.

Besides, I *like* Mutant Teenage Ninja Turtles. It was a heck of a lot more fun to watch than Rainbow Brite or My Little Pony, other things my daughter inflicted on me.

Lol, I don't watch the Ninja Turtles. It was just one of my favorite shows in my single digit age.
