Next Addition for the Fencing.Net Community?

I seem to love to assign myself new tasks for this fencing "hobby".

It's time to add some more to the Fencing.Net boards and add even more features for the fencing community.

But first, it's time for open comments.

Here are some things that I've seen that look interesting enough to add to the site, but I need you to vote on this since you, not me, will be using these features.

    1. Revive the feed to/from rec.sport.fencing. This would set up a new newsfeed link to the rec.sport.fencing USENET group and allow members here to post replies to the USENET group threads directly from Fencing.Net.

    2. Teams/Clubs Forums: The ability to set up private forums for fencing clubs or groups for public or private discussion.

    3. Ability to use email to reply to forum threads instead of the web.

OR - If there is a major feature or bug that you can identify, post it here as a suggestion.

    Thanks,
    Craig

    #3 would be most awesome.

How about a giant fence by e-mail type thing? A lot of us on the board know each other or travel to some of the same places. We could have "challenge" rules such as you have to be at X place and time or you forfiet the bout, that kind of thing and all bouts would have to be witnessed by a third person who could coorberate. We could fence our bouts before or after big tourneys or just whenever we will be in town where X fencer lives. Maybe make it a running point total for the people who sign up for it.

We would need to have some rules, like you would have to be a "Varified" member as in you would have to have a good phone number, address ect to keep trolls from causing trouble but other than that the main thing would just be traveling to the areas where the bouts were agreed upon and working it out with an independant observer who can coordinate something.

We have been talking about doing something like this in my division, so it is not my very own idea by the way, we have been working on it in our VA forum for bit, but I think it could be fun!

My vote would be to integrate FRED with Fencing.Net, so the results for tournaments can be visible in people's profiles (if they choose so), and so people can see tournament results on Fencing.Net directly without having to go to FRED. One login for both.

Also, I think it would make more people use FRED, and might bring some people from FRED over to fencing.net.

    Definately a chat room!

I know we had one a while back and no one entered it. But I believe, as of lately, we seem to be growing much more rapidly in members. I think the chat room would be quite full if you put it back in, Craig.

Also--with or without a link to FRED, would it be possible to add a calender which listed events (national, as well as local)? Hopefully culled through FRED as well as input from the Board.

My vote's for a calendar of competitions as well, both local and regional, here and abroad. Put it all in one place, instead of looking it up on myriad infrequently-updated websites.

I like Veeco's FRED integration idea too.

Some features I would like to see:

    1) Integrate with FRED to show Calendar view of events (not the list format)
    2) Map View - have a map of the US or a city/state search field. I want to know if there are events in specific places (e.x./ I'm going to New Orleans, are there any tournaments happening there)
    3) Access to FRED info from your profile. Tournament results, club, email, address, all that info, USFA #, etc.
    4) Advanced search (let the user choose just about any options). For example, Men's or Mixed Foil events rated XY in Z section during MArch but not in Miami, FL. A generic keyword search would be nice too.

    Ummm... That's about it.

    Rolls.

    Coooool...

All of these F101 <-> FRED integrations ideas sound really cool. The map thing is one i've thought of doing, by adding zip code to the data FRED asks the tournament organizers for. Also, the calendar view woiuld be supercool, and wouldn't requlire any data FRED doens't already have. (have to make the weekend cells way bigger than the weekday ones though )

Having results & such visible here at F101 can currently be done with the SOAP stuff.

Craig: if you decide you want to do any of these things or others with FRED, lemme know. I can help....

The FRED-F101 integration is a good idea, but I think it should be optional for members, and not required. Anonymity is something that some people on f101 value, and letting people view your results is a good way to lose it. Thats my two.

Updated poll to include an AskFRED integration option and moved 3 votes to it based upon the thread replies to date.

I agree that a chat room would be awesome, and that we would find people there.

The ASKFred idea sounds really cool, even though I unfortunately live in that corner of the U.S. where it isn't used much yet.

    Craig, you're awesome!

Craig, ask fred integration sounds like a great idea. If you do integrate it, at the same time could you make a chat room? Would making a chat room like last time be much work? For those who spend much time posting on this board because they have nothing better to do, it would mean a lot! If you can do it, I know many would appreciate it! Thank you.

    Fixes:
How about fixing the Photo Gallery? I haven't been able to log into it since forever now.
    Changes:
How about editing posts again. I'd like to be able to edit posts longer than 120 minutes later. Really bugs me when I see an typo that I can't fix.
    New:
Ask Fred integration would be great and a useful service. Especially if you can integrate tourney calendars and schedules in profiles.
Chat room would be great, but I could imagine it a moderator's nightmare! But sitting in the room, quietly in the corner) watching discussions between Jeff, Inq, Achilleus, Dan, Essk, and Eric would be worth paying for!
Otherwise this place is already GREAT the way it is!!

Maeve mentioned that f101 is great as it is, and I have to agree. Thank you, Craig and Gav, for giving us such a great community.
