MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Coaches College is to provide a professional fencing education and preparation program which includes various pedagogical philosophies, theories and training methodologies. The curriculum of the Coaches College reflects a national and international eclectic body of fencing knowledge and is designed to encourage fencing coaches to develop their own unique and individual coaching based on a strong educational foundation.*

The USFA Coaches College was originally created to improve and to maintain a consistency of fencing instruction nationwide. While this is still the underlying priority, the mission of the Coaches College has expanded to the above statement.

In order to better meet the needs of its members and to facilitate the growth of qualified instruction, the United States Fencing Association developed the National Coaching Development Program. The Coaches College was created as part of this program to educate prospective fencing coaches, increasing the base of fencing instruction in the United States. The program is designed to take current fencers, physical educators with some fencing experience, and those who are already teaching fencing, and raise their level of knowledge enabling them to provide safe, progressive lessons to their students.

The USFA Coaches College has a tiered, progressive curriculum, offered as week-long courses in each of the three weapons, at five levels of competency. Instruction is provided by the Coaches College staff who are knowledgeable and respected coaches from across the country. The instruction for each weapon and each level consists of working gym sessions and auxiliary course classroom sessions.

In addition to providing a sound body of fencing knowledge to the participants, the Coaches College offers courses that are pertinent to contemporary coaching. Topics and classes covered include risk management, nutrition, drugs awareness, weapon repair and maintenance, coaching effectiveness and others. Some of these classes are taught by lecturers from within the body of the USFA and some by lecturers from the Olympic Center staff. Each participant attends a Red Cross CPR for child and adult course annually, and a Red Cross/USOC developed Sport Safety Training course every three years, as part of the college.

*Continuing Education Credits are now available for all courses. *
Manuals are included in the cost of attending a course and contain lessons, drills, and terminology for that weapon. Upon successful completion of a course, a certificate will be awarded to the participant recognizing them as an instructor in that weapon and level.

Historical notes:
The Coaches College was first organized in 1985 by Jack KEANE at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, utilizing the gymnasium and the dormitories at the nearby School for the Blind.
The Basic Level in Foil was the only level taught at the first College.
Ed Richards and Alex Beguinet are the only two remaining original instructors.
1996 was the first year that the program implemented the Five Levels in each of the three weapons.
The five-branched star logo, representing the five levels, was also instituted in 1996.

Other programs offered by the USFA National Coaching Development Program*
Area Seminars -*Evolved into a weekend session focusing on addressing specific club or area fencing instructional needs. Usually serves USFA members participating in the Coaches College. Topics from auxiliary courses available.
Learn to Fence Instructor -*Implemented in 1999 to address the need of presenting youth activity instructors in schools or youth service agencies with a safe and fun fencing class to add to their programs. Oriented toward physical educators with no or little fencing knowledge. Currently offering foil.
Wheelchair Coaching -
Black Star - A series of seminar/workshops with the nations top coaches. For those coaches beyond the coaches college who wish or need a professional update or idea exchange in the highest level peer group possible in this country.

Application documents will be posted at www.coach.usfencing.org Wednesday Feb 16 2006, and also available at the JO's this weekend.

There are no prerequisites for Level 1- other than a desire to learn something about coaching fencing. For level 2, it is required that you have completed the level 1 course in the same weapon and at least one other level 1 course. For level 3 it is required that you have finished level 1 (all three weapons) and have at least 2 level 2 courses completed, including the same weapon you wish to enroll in level 3. For level 4 it is only required that you have taken the level 3 in the same weapon. (this is as far as I remember it)
There is some possibility of "skipping" a level for advanced coaches with prior experience, but you would have to get special permission to do so.

I would highly reccomend this program. I have attended Coaches College since 1998 and have never had less than an excellent experience there. I have been coaching for about 8 years and have gained a lot of information and experience that I couldn't have acquired without 20+ years of coaching. I am also a Prevost and member of the USFCA, though I don't believe I would have been able to pass the practical portion of the exam so easily if I had not attended coaches college.
