MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Coaches College is to provide a professional fencing education and preparation program which includes various pedagogical philosophies, theories and training methodologies. The curriculum of the Coaches College reflects a national and international eclectic body of fencing knowledge and is designed to encourage fencing coaches to develop their own unique and individual coaching based on a strong educational foundation.*
The USFA Coaches College was originally created to improve and to maintain a consistency of fencing instruction nationwide. While this is still the underlying priority, the mission of the Coaches College has expanded to the above statement.
In order to better meet the needs of its members and to facilitate the growth of qualified instruction, the United States Fencing Association developed the National Coaching Development Program. The Coaches College was created as part of this program to educate prospective fencing coaches, increasing the base of fencing instruction in the United States. The program is designed to take current fencers, physical educators with some fencing experience, and those who are already teaching fencing, and raise their level of knowledge enabling them to provide safe, progressive lessons to their students.
The USFA Coaches College has a tiered, progressive curriculum, offered as week-long courses in each of the three weapons, at five levels of competency. Instruction is provided by the Coaches College staff who are knowledgeable and respected coaches from across the country. The instruction for each weapon and each level consists of working gym sessions and auxiliary course classroom sessions.
In addition to providing a sound body of fencing knowledge to the participants, the Coaches College offers courses that are pertinent to contemporary coaching. Topics and classes covered include risk management, nutrition, drugs awareness, weapon repair and maintenance, coaching effectiveness and others. Some of these classes are taught by lecturers from within the body of the USFA and some by lecturers from the Olympic Center staff. Each participant attends a Red Cross CPR for child and adult course annually, and a Red Cross/USOC developed Sport Safety Training course every three years, as part of the college.
*Continuing Education Credits are now available for all courses. *
Manuals are included in the cost of attending a course and contain lessons, drills, and terminology for that weapon. Upon successful completion of a course, a certificate will be awarded to the participant recognizing them as an instructor in that weapon and level.
Historical notes:
The Coaches College was first organized in 1985 by Jack KEANE at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, utilizing the gymnasium and the dormitories at the nearby School for the Blind.
The Basic Level in Foil was the only level taught at the first College.
Ed Richards and Alex Beguinet are the only two remaining original instructors.
1996 was the first year that the program implemented the Five Levels in each of the three weapons.
The five-branched star logo, representing the five levels, was also instituted in 1996.
