Sainct-Didier seems to advise just that, however --
taking cuts at the forte and thrusting with
opposition...

Yes, he shows thrusts with opposition against cuts (as do many other
masters) but not with a 35" blade. The blades in Sainct Didier are
reasonably consistently shown at about 60% of the height of the man wieldin=
g
them. On my 5'9" frame this equates to a 40" blade. For Sainct Didier's
blades to be 35" his Lieutenent and Prevost must have been about 4'10" (yes
I'm being silly here).

If you counterthrust against a cut you have to place the forte against the
opposing forte and still have the blade length to simultaneously put at
least a couple of inches of blade into his body. The only examples of
counterattacks with opposition against cuts that I know of with weapons as
short as a 35" blade are exceptions that prove the rule, like the lunge fro=
m
the Spadroon Guard against a head cut in Anti Pugilism (1790), where to gai=
n
the necessary distance the cut is taken on the basket, not the forte.

Cheers
Stephen
