Since there was more than a single rapier type, one
would expect that there would be more than one way to
defend-the user could presumeably parry more quickly
with a shorter weapon which had a lighter point, such
as with the dancing or walking rapier. A 60-inch
weapon weighing three pounds would probably present
too much dead weight to just parry with, but in that
case one could leave the point more or less in place
and move one's body and the grip end to provide a
defense movement. Nearly all the rapier masters
mention the parry, hence "riparare di croce","croiser
l'epee," and "crossing the sword", but this movement
would hardly be useful with the long weapon. One sees
the difference in the work of Camillo Agrippa: his
gardas in prima, seconda, terza and carta look prety
much like parries when he uses a weapon which looks
rather short, but his movements with the long rapier
with a developed hilt, look more like a body evasion
with a thrust along the opponent's blade, where he
says "fa un paso largo con il pie destro". I believe
he shows two different weapons in his work, but i will
be glad to be corrected if one of our members would do
so. Sorry to be so wordy. Ray Smith
