    uniform stencilling

I would like to get my name stencilled on my uniform. I have seen that Physical Chess sells a "self-stencilling kit." Does anyone know anything about it? Is the stencil made with broken letters (like the M*A*S*H logo)? What options do I have to do this, and not look like a bozo?

The only thing that makes one look like a bozo is acting or fencing like one.

Your name on your uniform can be done by hand with a pen, by stencils and fabric paint you buy (at a fabric store, or other vendor), or by a company that stencils (Marx Enterprises, many fencing vendors, many sports stores).

Just make sure that the letters conform to the rules. Other than that, it really doesn't make a difference to what people think of you.

All stencils have broken letters... the only alternative that doesn't would be a letter stamp, however if you use a stencil, you can easily fill in the holes by hand.

Embroidery. Look in the yellow pages. The same places that embroider logos onto polo shirts and baseball hats can do your fencing jacket and/or knickers. Look up the regulations for letter size so that they conform. It cost me about $24 to get my jacket done. Looks better, lasts longer.

    Incidently, the regulations...

Dark blue block lettering. Minimum of 8cm high, maximum of 10cm high. Width isn't regulated so that the letters can be sized to fit, depending on length of name and width of fencer.

I like the stamping idea... is that how alot of people do it? Is this something I could do myself? Where would I get appropriate stamps?

also, in the "USA" part of my lettering, can I put blue stars and stripes in the USA part?

Not and be legal. Marx Enterprise used to do that for the US Team and it looked great. The Italians tried to one-up and made the ITL very Renasaince, so you couldn't tell what it was. The FIE put their foot down and demanded Block letters.

And rainbow lamés. I think we all agree those cross the line...

By the way, I've seen several lamés from, I think, Blue Gauntlet that have the stars and stripes DFP is talking about. Would these be passed at a National competition?

Since noone has mentioned it I just thought I'd throw in my two öre...

A 'cheapo' version of naming your jacket (or breeches) is to do the printing/stenciling on a piece of white cloth that you sew onto your kit.

    There are some advantages:
    • If you are still growing you can easily remove your name and put it onto your next jacket.
    • If you grow out of your jacket, or for any reason plan to sell it, it will look nicer if it's 'clean'.
    • Printings can get messed up. Have seen it myself on a guys jacket, his name appeared to be in 3D.
    Fencing is my only PvP.

For any national competitions, you don't even need USA on your lamé, so it shouldn't be an issue. It would only be if you went to an international competition.

No... you don't need USA anywhere. Only your name.
