Array I didn't bother to spend enough time to figure it out. How about some instructions for those of us that have never used the service before Pelle?
***okay, figured it out. You need to go to the bottom of the page past all the junk and click on the free button. Then wait about a bit for it to be your turn in the que (which I am pretty sure does not actually exist and is just a scam o try to get you to join their service)***

Array Well,
To be honest you gave nothing to work with.
You have a couple of tiny clips of your self trying a couple of hot-shot actions.
That's not enough for anyone to provide feedback on.
Sorry, but you need to ask this sort of question from your coach or teammates who were at the venue. Take your time. Read carefully. -

Array Do you have any longer clips at all? If you do, I'd be glad to host them for you. Just shoot me an email or an IM. -

I would have to say I sort of agree with MrEpee. I am not sure I would qualify the actions as "hot shot" though ;-). It's very hard to assess someone's fencing with just 20 seconds of footage.
But from what I saw, I would point out the following problems that you need to work on:
- You need to relax your shoulders. In the second clip, it seems like you are so tense in your back and your chest that you can't move your hand freely.
- You need to sit down more on your on guard position
- You need to properly place your feet at 90 degrees angle when you advance and retreat.
- You should not lean forward when you are retreating
- You are not extending your point forward, you are moving your hand forward. There is a very big difference between extending from the point, and extending from the point. Try to think less about what your bell guard is doing and more about what your point is doing. You'll be much more precise.
That's about all I could see in the 20 seconds. I can't tell if these are general recurrent problems or not, but they do show up on the videos you gave. - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
- To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Array I agree with the two epeeists... And I'd like to add... more footwork... If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time~Proust

yeah I was there.... who was that crazy guy with the big camera? and for future reference, I like to refer to that competition as the J-Lo. -
on video 1;
not every day you meet someone who begins their lunge by withdrawing their arm - did you even meet their blade with your search? Straight arm AIP would be easier (depending on the ref of course).
video 2
All one paced as has been said before. Who actually scored? looked like you just got the final action but the angle wasn't good. -

What day was thet clip from, Pelle? Sat or Sun? (I think I know one of the people in the clip. But they are fuzzy, so I'm not sure.)
I guess I failed to make my movie debut...too busy dealing with my opponents. Some people are like slinkys. They serve no useful purpose, but it sure feels good when you push them down the stairs. -

Bonehead, firstly that guy with the massive camera was different, first he used a french grip and he also got really intensive coaching during bouts....
which pool were you in, i was in 4. how did you finish?
haha J-Lo.... Hello. My name is Inigo Monytoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die -

BUT, if I had one thing to say, judging by your second movie, you don't move your back arm when you lunge. I you do that, you'll increase your lunging power a little, and your recovering speed alot. It's okay to leave it down, so long as when you need it, you bring it up. That's one of my pet peeves... -

Array Hi Pelle!! Thanks for being brave enough to put your fencing up there!
A looooong time ago, someone posted some of their lunges. (Was it Rolls?) I gushed how the convergence of technology would make fencing video (and critique of video) commonplace. That hasn't happened yet, but it's only getting more plausible. Comments: Totally cool that this is from a cell phone. I guess I'm showing my age.
home_020.avi: You're on the far side? Your opponent chases you down, and then you take the strip back. You had some chances at a very clear touch, especially as the final action turned out to be none too clear (when the opponent suddenly closed).
Note that when fencer left is chasing, he is taking regular, even steps, with his hand in one spot. You could've broken up his advances with some body feints, and retained your ground. Mostly, though, you let him get into a rhythm, which is also useful -- since his blade was immobile, you could have given it a strong beat and then done a straight lunge. This means you'd be reversing directions quickly -- you can make this easier for yourself by sitting down, shuffling the feet, opening out. You certainly don't want to be as upright as you were, that close to your endline.
In home_017.avi, you see how you suddenly change directions -- but you're still in front of your opponent, and hittable? Sitting down will let you turn that sudden stop into a sudden fleche or lunge. The term is "turning the corner" -- in a past thread there is video of Sada Jacobson, who is the world's best corner turner. If you can find it, it's good for inspiration and mimicking.
In both actions, you finish with your back shoulder spinning to the front. This happens when the chest is too forward-facing, it also impedes taking a low en garde and direction changes. You can fix this quickly by keeping your back arm up and out, classical style, for a while (a solid month). The body will adjust by taking a more angled guard. This will also really help with your hand (see next).
I dig your hand -- you keep it in the box, and you keep the tip directed mostly at the opponent. The biggest improvement I can propose is very commonplace -- your hand sits in the middle of your target, not closing out anything. Keep it in six, high and out there -- thus you close out the weak line and all the other threat necessarily comes inside your strongest parry. This will also let you fix the wrist, which is presently broken. Broken wrist = early fatigue, bad point placement, no power during hit, inability to replace the tip after a beat.
Lastly, you look comfortable on the blade (making blade contact), but at touch-time the opponent has unimpeded access to your target. I recommend removing the blade contact from the middle action, and adding to the end of the action. You know when the action is coming to a close, and blade contact there is worth a thousand middle-of-phrase beats. If you train for it, you find the opponent's blade when they launch. Rap the blade before you hit, or draw the attack and parry.
Hope this helps some! Thanks for sharing!!! -
I placed second. and I would say that its a bit of an exageration to call it an international tournement... I mean I guess it was but those hong kong guys weren't so great, they didn't even medal (From what jujie told me I kinda thought they'd be all kick*ss and invincible but she can exagerate sometimes).
looking at the results I guess its you calvin... but who's point left? Sabre eh? -
lol, I just watched the clips.... I know who your fencing in the first one (FISH CREEK SUPPORT! WOO!) but who are you fencing in the second one?
As for the first clip, thats just his slow attack thing. I can't make heads or tails of the blade action though. Did you catch his blade in 2? or did you search in 2 and find his blade in prime? or did you miss his blade completely and get lucky with the box? I would hardly call this a "Hot Shot" action... the attack (I've fenced that guy countless numbers of times) is coming very delayed and very low, and will almost always be given priority against what some people would like to think is a "stop hit". The best options to solve that attack are either prime riposte as the distance closes, or single light counter attack.... and whatever the hit was, you got it, so good enough right?
As for the second clip.... kinda boring... I can't tell who your fencing, but to me it looks like you slowly move up and down the piste for a little while and then finally launch an attack.... Put something more interesting on there ....
I don't know the circumstances of the bout, but I would say you need to make stuff happen more... it looks to me like both those hits (I don't know if you scored the second one because I can't see either the blades or the lights, but it looks like you got it) were scored when the other guy did something, better oponents will be able to score touches on you _everytime_ they make something happen, so you have to be the one making things happen, rather than hoping they make a mistake. Its like an unforced error in tennis... your not gonna win a game on those alone.
Just my 2 cents... -

Array The J-Lo Hey Alex, nice job with the second place. Who won the thing and where'd Jeff place? I wanted to come out for the epee but it wasn't worth it to fly and pay $. -
