hmmm, sounds aweful familiar to me. but then couldn't be sure.
got offered sponsoring too. I said I wasn't by far good enough. he also offered me to buy my equipment. I asked why he would wanna do that. Reply: to be a friend. I told him that you couldn't buy friendship and that the possibility of such a friendship were rather limited due to the distance and after all being a buddy online is not really the same as being buddy by personally knowing someone.
After that we actually had an ok conversation which had little to do with anything what was mentioned in the previous posts. But the beginning sounds awefully similar...
Don't know, don't care to know either. Maybe just a bit of a poor soul. There are tons of them in the web. Have had my shares...

I think I've heard from this fellow before. He was creepyweird. Didn't offer to sponsor me or anything, though, but he was disturbingly interested in getting fencing photos from me.

Do you have a better idea? What would the guys at PBT do about it?

You did the right thing in reporting this person to Gav, SwordSoul. Cyberfreaks like that are the reason online communities get a bad rap.

Hasn't done anything wrong? See, there's something called "propositioning," and what this guy is doing is feeling out any potential federal agents hunting for freaks like him. Note how in the AIM conversation posted he's very circumspect, and does not make any direct offers or say anything that could get him into trouble legally. In fact, he even opens the door for entrapment by asking "what would I have to do to get you in a PBT suit?"
Were a law enforcement officer to answer that in a manner suggesting criminal activity, any case against the individual would be compromised.

I'd wager he also scouts the people he talks to very carefully, as predators of his ilk do. The best advice is to just stay away and keep as much personally identifying information offline as possible. Most of us here are friendly, but the downside is that @$$holes like this use that to satisfy their deviancy.
Why? Two reasons. Because someone has to, and because I can.

I got IMed by this fellow too I think, on Yahoo. Again, asking for pictures of my club fencing, wanting to know about our results, asking if we needed a sponsor, wondering if he could be my friend.... Very odd.

Yuck. Just plain...yuck! I've not been "visited" by him, but on AOL we have an IM Catcher that holds all IMs from people not on our buddy lists. I never bother to check the catcher, so who knows? Maybe he did...

A few months back, when I had fencing as a hobby on my profile, someone IMmed me to tell me how "hot" fencing uniforms were, etc. Needless to say, the creep got blocked.

I think we should just ignore him. Once he gets no more attention, he'll shut up eventually.......
As long as he does get the attention, he'll get to the results he's searching for.

But for sure we should not have him take away the quality and the fun of this forum. Which he won't if we just ignore him.

There's a reason I don't post my AIM screen name on my profile...

    a few things to note:

    1) pbt won't get involved in this at all; why would they? and when i was talked to, i was offered uhlmann or allstar uniforms.

    2) what he's doing isn't a crime. yet. he hasn't quite crossed that line yet and all the information he knows is plainly available online. if you don't want people like this to bug you or know stuff about you, keep your info more confidential. though i'd like to point out that he figured out my identity/name (not like that'd be tough to do, anyone with half a brain could do that).

    3) if you don't want people to IM you, don't put your screen name up on the forum and keep your buddy list privacy option on "only allow people on my buddy list to contact me". but if you also lose the people who might be fun to randomly talk to.

    4) craig knows about this guy already, i'm positive of that. there's nothing that can be done on his end.
