My worst nighmare as a vendor...

So I'm working the monthly Orange Coast tourney in Long Beach yesterday (best attended I've ever seen there....and on Duel weekend, yet!). Donald Clinton asks me to do the mask checks...I failed three....but it one the one foil mask that got to me.

It was the fencer's first competition in years

It was a mask I'd sold

I'd just joked that it'd better not fail...then the probe popped through

She's a coach

At MY salle!!!

I should know better than to tempt the gods that way! About the only thing I can say in my defense was that I DID try to talk her into a higher end mask, but there were finances to consider.

Going to your first tournament? Read "Choose yer weapon, Laddie (or: Dude, where's my foil?)"

Proud member of the August Armorers...."We fix swords gud!!"

"Pull his head up...he suckin' mud!"

Ka-parry (that's for you, Morion!)

That's brutal... reminds me of the time I sold a computer to someone, and right after they paid, they asked if I could hook it up. I took it out of the box, set it down, and couldn't help but notice the huge footprint-shaped dent on the side of the case.

What do you do in those situations? Be as accomodating as you can, look them straight in the eye and say "no returns without receipt", or do you run away and hide under a table somewhere?

Has the coach mentioned anything about the mask?

It hasn't come up...I'll probably see her Wednesday and we'll talkit over then. Fact is, she bought it primarily for teaching...the idea to compete didn't come up until recently.

As far as returns...for a small item like a wire...if a wire job of mine pops early on and I can'[t fix it, I'll rewire for free...for a larger item like a mask...dunno.
