Fencing paper...

I have an assignment to write a paper on the history of something in the US, and I wanted to do fencing, but I've been searching for awhile and haven't found anything worth writing about. I've tried various searches for anything relating to the history of fencing in the US, but I can't seem to find anything. Any suggestions?

I don't know how popular/successful fencing in America was way back when, but if there's a big difference between now and then, perhaps you could talk about what has made the difference/process of development.

On Fencing by Aldo Nadi might have some relevant historic stuff in it relating to fencing in America. In fact in the appendix, there is a quote from the New York Herald Tribune talking about Nadi himself, and mentions "His first appearance in New York, then, was an important event for American fencing..."

P.S. Does anyone know anything about migration of coaching into America? Is/was there much of it? What sort of impact has it had? Why does/did it occur? Is it and its impact any more notable than in other countries?

I would suggest interviewing a coach who was from a communist country.
The impact of the fall of the Soviet Union scattered excellent "State Trained" coaches from all over Europe.
Fencing was affected by it but also gymnastics. The US became a gymnastics power when the coaches from Russia and Romania came over here.
The coaches from Ohio State would be a great bunch to interview. Find a coach from Poland too, (Ed Korfanty?).
The paper would be fascinating, post it here when you are done would you?

Adding to Mo's point, there was also a migration of Hungarian coaches (like Chaba Elthes) in 1956 or thereabouts due to the upheaval at that time. There have been a few cycles like this...

I'll post the paper here before I hand it it, hopefully I can get some good feedback here. Also, I'm looking into those books, but I'm going to have to go to the public library, because my school library has one book on fencing.

That I find a bit sad.

If you can get back copies of American Fencing Magazine, there have been some very interesting articles. For example the AFLA was before the FIE. That successful electric fencing was started in the U.S.

The presence of Eastern Euro and Russian coaches has in my opinion leveled the playing field for US fencers.
The results in women's saber illustrate this. All women saber fencers basically started at the same time. Fencers here now have the benefit of all the experience that once was owned by the Eastern block. The level of expertise may even be higher for coaches in the United States due to the lack of funding previously available in former Eastern Block countries. Many of the best coaches are here now.
The French and Italians have the long standing history and support of fencing but the US is certainly making progress.
