Damn! voted in the wrong option. I don't think that any of these films look like good Oscar material. When you compare these with some of the movies from the past they look quite weak.

I've not seen Million Dollar baby yet - it has only just come out over here. Of those listed above I would vote for that on hype. Eastwood has been a very good director in the past and this movie looks set to be another goody.

So which is it, Best Director, as the poll says, or Best Picture, as your starting post says?

Who cares? It's not like any of the options have Vin Diesel anyway.

I haven't watched any of these, but the buzz is on "Sideways". It's a small movie, but apparently an excellent one.

Usually there's some spectacle in the best pic noms, but these are all performance-driven vehicles. Why didn't "The Passion" get a nom?

[controversial]Perhaps because the academy tends to shy away from Fantasy films? [/controversial].

Before anyone says - LOTR was the exception.

It's also not that good as a movie. Lacks subtlety, good direction etc

Didn't see Passion but from the shorts I saw it looked a little too violent to make an Oscar. Mix violence with religion and the controversy factor will limit it's Oscar success. That and Mel decided not to put any money into it's Oscar campaign.

It didn't have Vin either!

I saw Coach Carter and to me it was far better than all those films. It was really, really, good.

I didn't see "The Passion" either, but its popularity, combined with the "gravity" of the subject, you'd think it would garner at least a nom.

I've only been going to see super-indies or mega-blockbusters, and have thus missed all the Oscar flicks.
