I had one of those masks and sewed it in with fishing line. I used it in competitions for a couple of years until it finally failed the punch test (tried using the dishwasher to clean it and ut loosened the mesh).

Regarding using dental floss to affix snap-on bibs more permenantly:

(nothing personal oiuyt, but I would like to hear it from more than one source. If I suggest it and I am wrong, well, I am in a load of trouble.)
N/p. Try searching with Google with the phrase "fencing mask bib dental floss". The first 5 results are all additional sources of the same solution. I'd never heard of using fishing line before Crash55's post, but that'd obviously work also. Basically any thread-like thing that is sturdy and won't break from the normal wear and tear that a mask goes through. Hope this helps.

Why is there this assumption that these beginners need masks that are necessary to pass USFA regulations to enter a competition?
I'm going to stand by my first assumption that the only reason that the safety issue is being brought up is because Wafath and schwarta are not satisfied with the fencing instructor. Had there been a qualified instructor, this hub-bub would not have occurred about the snap-on bibs.
