Not the French, or French-speakers. They just give you a pained expression and say, "Let's switch to English. Your French is 'orrible!"

Strange ... it always seems to me that (outside of Montreal), if you *try* to speak French they'll immediately switch to English and treat you nicely. If you don't even bother, they'll pretend not to understand a word.
Though not always with me ... by the end of a weekend in Quebec, people will occasionally have half a conversation with me before switching over to English. I don't know if I have a Quebecois accent when speaking French, or if I just sound really funny. In any case, eventually they figure out that my slow speach and lack of vocabulary isn't (just) because I'm a moron, but because I don't really speak French, and switch over. Similar Threads -
