A couple of points here.
1) The vendor was wrong. At least one fencer in the top 100 does.
2) It's not slander or stupidity. It's marketing. The job of companies, specifically sports equipment companies, is to make the user feel that their equipment makes a positive impact on the game, and that other equipment is substandard.
There are reasons for both. For the top fencers, choosing equipment comes down to a variety of things. First is sponsorship. The French team is sposored by Prieur, Cartel, and Adidas just to name a few. Guess which equipment they'll be using at tournaments?
The German team is sposored, of course, by Allstar/Uhlmann.
Another thing is availabilty. When I started fencing, I looked at purchasing points. There was a fencing store in my area. They carried at least two models of everything. One french, one german. All the top fencers in the area who recommended equipment to me said, get german.
I constantly think about switching, but the ability for me to get parts from Italy, or LP, or somewhere else is difficult and expensive.
I can only imagine that if I lived in Germany, France, or China, that the availability of parts would be just as difficult.
