Hello Hello. Im new to fencing. I've checked around and cant find a club anywhere within 50 miles. Does anyone have any advice for a beginner on his own? Thanks. -

Array Have you checked the "where to fence" list of salles at www.usfencing.org yet? -
Yep, checked that. Thanks though. It seems the closest is about 2 hrs away. Im from just outside of Parkersburg, WV if thats of any help.
Can anyone recommend any good books for a newbie. Thanks. -
Hey, I am having the same problem. Nowhere within 2 hours. I wish there was a good way for beginners to start on their own. Any advice out there? -

Array A not-uncommon problem. It's why I didn't start until I was in my mid-twenties, in college.
Learning from a book is going to be really difficult; you will have to interpret the instructions from little or no real experience, and there will be no one to correct mistakes or bad form, so that'll tend to get ingrained and become hard to cure later on. It's better than nothing, though, I suppose, if one really has the itch. Here is a list from rec.sport.fencing. http://www.babyoilbonanza.net/fencing/Faq3.html
Alaux' "Modern Fencing" is good, albeit published in 1975, hence no longer all that modern. Szabo is good for exercises and drills. Barbasetti is REALLY old. The rest of the instructional books I haven't read. Hutton, Castle and Morton are really more trivia and duelling anecdotes.
I hope this is of some help, and am sorry I can't offer more. Condolences for not being more fortunate geographically... -

Array Very difficult It is very very difficult to learn fencing on your own from books or other sources. Personally i found it very difficult when i went a year without a coach. If you know the basics practice doing them the right way. I went to tournaments and events when i didn't have a coach and my technique got all screwed up. Good luck to you through, but in my opinion you can't learn all fencing from books.

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do except move, wait for college (if you're younger than that), or wait for a club to open up. Fencing is expanding rapidly, but if you're in an area without any fencing history, it's unlikely that a coach in your area will open a club. -

Array I would recommend waiting until college or until a club opens up, but this website was helpful, if you really want to start learning on your own. http://http://www.geocities.com/strydermike/ I want to be remembered when I'm dead. I want books written about me. I want songs sung about me. And then, hundreds of years from now, I want episodes of my life to be played out weekly at half past nine by some great heroic actor of the age.
