Research Hi all. I'm after some information about the number of fencers on this board who fit into the different age categories outlined above for a research project I'm working on.
Also, if you are interested in participating in a couple of other questionnaire studies related to fencing, please private message me!

Array Umm...what age categories outlined above?? -
the poll took longer to make than i thought! it's there now... -
mrbiggs laws of fencing.net polls:
1. There will always be someone who posts after the thread is created, but before the poll is made, saying that there is no poll.
2. Someone will always post to say that the poll has some major design flaw, and that therefore they cannot accurately express their opinion. -

Array Well if I fit into the 20 and under category, I also fit into the 30 and under, and the 40 and under and teh 50 and under, and the 60 and under. How do I know which to pick??????? This is a huge design flaw, and presents an enormous bias in the poll. It has to be changed so that I can express myself freely, and you can collect accurate data. -

this poll has a major design flaw.
... i'm under 20, so i assume you want me to indicate my choice as "20 and under"....
but i'm also under 60. and thus "60 and under" is a valid response for me as well.............. -

RULE # 3
two people will point out the same thing at roughly the same time. saying pretty much the exact same thing. it will be sad for the second person, because they will feel like if they had woken up for breakfast and thus eaten their wheaties, they might have arrived there first. -
fine. mrbiggs is quite correct on both counts, as are you both.
options, i guess, should be
20 and under
21 - 30
31 - 40
41 - 50
51 - 60
61+
if i could figure out how to modify the poll, i would, but since i can't, please do the necessary translations yourselves. -

Okay, but... there's a 20 year spread for the first selection (20 and under), however, there's a 61 year spread for the last selection (61+... a quick search shows that someone recently lived to 122 (died back in 1997)).
I'm not sure how many 118 year old fencers there are, but still... -
I don't know how many people over 80 use the internet. Probably not alot. -

MR Why sabre? Because you don't take heads with the point. -

Array And some of us would be more inclined to respond if the results were anonymous instead of public... -
sabreur:
i am a student in sport science. i am studying the effects of expertise, and am particularly interested in what makes experts 'special'. i am also a fencer, and would like to be able to justify all the time i spend fencing by calling it 'doing research' and so i'm interested in using fencing (and some other sports) as a way of asking some questions about how we become expert.
the purpose of this poll is just to try and capture, in very broad strokes, the age demographic of fencers. this poll is one of a number of such polls. i have posted a very similar poll on the UK forum. we are also asking for similar information at a local level (from a number of clubs), at a regional level (from a number of divisions) and also at a national level (from national sports bodies).
the responses will be collated across polls, which will hopefully give us an accurate representation of participants in fencing at different levels of the sport. the data may eventually get published in the form of a graph in a journal (perhaps), but at this point it is really more for my own curiousity. as an aside, i am also curious to see how the poll responses from the forums compare with responses from more traditional sources of information.

you are right. however, i found a number of studies which show that you actually get more accurate responses when the results are public. so, i'm hoping that although i may get fewer responses, they'll paint a more accurate picture. -

Me, oh I'm in there somewhere... under 70 for sure. -

Array For this kind of info, anon would be better. I tend to only "vote" in anon. polls.

Craig It would be helpful to be able to edit a poll after you post. Maybe with a time limit, but I've found some sort of error to the few polls I've posted nearly immediately after hitting the submit button... only to be frustrated that I can't fix it! -

On the other hand rrs can now eliminate the double responders who answered the poll question accurately, or didn't give their gender. Don't let 'em drop it. Don'tlet'emdropit. Stop it... bebop it.

Assuming that you're merely talking about double responders as in people who selected multiple age categories there are remarkably few who did so (accurately, acaba did so but inaccurately).
