    Luther King

I don't think King's birthday deserves to be a national holiday. He was a good guy but this is way too much. I think I should have a choice whether to work or not. If some African Americans don't want to work then I fully understand that but I do want to work and make money.

I love holidays. I dont care what they're for, as long as I dont need to go to school, I'm happy.

RL has talked like that in the past, but he isn't talking like that in his post.

Okay, but if he wants to take a stance that's a little bit on the edge in terms of political correctness, maybe he shouldn't be a dick in all his other posts on this forum.

Being a dick and having a relevant point are not related. You should address the thought, not the personality. Ad hominum, and all that...

What cheeses me is that the only people who get this supposed 'national holiday' off with pay are government employees and maybe bankers.

I don't think King did all that much for my people. He did a lot of preaching but very little action. In my opinion the people that really made a difference were Jim Kelly, Jim Brown, John Singleton, Ron O'Neal, Pam Grier etc...

As for slavery? After finding out how crappy those people in Africa live...all I can say is........I'm glad my ancestors got on the boat!

Ironic way to honor the man, isn't it? Giving the FBI and others who harassed him when he was alive the day off with pay...

I agree, and why isn't there a Robert E. Lee day? Or a Thomas Jefforson day?
Or a FDR day? Or a Abe Lincoln day? Why are national holidays only reserved to black or minority heroes? Don't get me wrong, Dr. King was a great and wonderful man, and what he did for his people was very important in our countrys' history, but why oh why do we have to swim in P.C.?
But this is just one humble crackers opinion.

You mean the confederate general? Um...the North would never, ever have it.

First, there is a President's Day federal holiday. If we had to celebrate every president, we'd have 43 days off and that would be too many, just for the celebration of Presidents!

Martin Luther King was a good representative of his time for the struggles of minority communities and the progress of the civil rights in this country. The holiday is less than 20 years old. Perhaps one day it will be a collective day to recognize community leaders instead of a separate day for each significant advocate, but for now, we recognize him for his work and efforts.

It's not always PC. It's just a somewhat awkward recognition and appreciation of service.

I think we should celebrate Bruce Lee's birthday.
