Fencing drunk Is there an FIE rule against fencing drunk in World Cups? If so, what is the allowed blood to alchohol ratio. -
Fencing drunk? Geez, I don't even drink the night before a tournament. You've got an iron constitution, my friend. -

Array I don't know about fencing drunk ,but you can fence just fine on some beer. Case in point. ( Was a long time ago) I was at a team foil evewnt in SF. A club, (first letter H, last letter T) showed uo with a case of beer and proceeded to kick every other's team *** until they were the only ones left straggling. Man I was awed. What balls! Array In the UK alcohol is listed as a controlled drug. But I can't find my drugs test card to tell you what the limit is (I'm assuming that it's the same as the FIE).
As a muscle relaxant alcohol can improve your performance by making you feel relaxed. Too much and you throw up and make an arse of yourself! -
Loosening up : good.
Opponents having two blades : bad.
I tried this after a coach told me I was fencing too stiffly. Yeah, I was loose, but the lack of fine motor control more than negated the benefit. Worst part was that the coach could tell from my fencing that I was a little betrunken.
That was foil, though. Maybe drunk sabrists have a different experience of things.
Got a tournament on Sunday. Must do some research... "Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats."

Booze works fine for some, but as for me: giveme an hour or two alone wiht my wife and I'll be REAL relaxed for the tournament!

Array Man, if it takes an hour or two, then maybe you should change your name to the "viagra touch" you think?????!!!!!!!! If not I am impressed............... "Kill the men, save the women, and by the gods, do not spill the wine" -
An HOUR OR TWO damn!!!If I do it for 15 minuntes I need two days sleep and a bowl of Wheeties to recover. but to answer the question I did fence drunk twice once in a bouts for beer eppe match(i lost kept hitting the floor) and a foil match ( don't recall what happened there)My point, don't do it it's llke driving drunk except your armed and on foot -
I thought that this might be appropriate :
#1 Symptom:
You suck at most normal sports, are clumsy and awkward, and have longed to participate in a sport where you could kick some @$$. This means that you have actually longed to be a fencer for "your whole life." (Don't worry, any day on which you display a lack of prowess can be written off as due to your really bad hangover. Just lie flat on your belly, sprawled across the strip and everyone will understand, or more likely join you.)

Well, if you guys can only last for fifteen minutes then maybe you should be the ones talking to your doctors about Viagra, or maybe bumping up your fitness routines a notch or two. My wife can attest that there's nothing wrong with MY endurance...

I wouldn't even think about drinking before fencing!!! If you can drink and still fence you must be fencing some pretty crappy people. It is not who you are or what you've done, It is who you WILL be and what you WILL do! -
From the 1999 USFA rule book:
t.132 The list of banned substances and the procedure of the IOC have been adopted as
reference documents by the FIE. They are attached in an appendix and updated after
each revision made by the IOC.
This list points out that, at the request of the FIE, alcohol testing will be carried out
at fencing competitions. An alcohol level of above 0.05% is liable to the penalties
specified in the Rules.
Don't know for sure but it appears that the FIE does consider alcohol a prohibited substance. You'ld think there would be a rule for world cups if we have one for NACs. "To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men." -Abraham Lincoln -
Quit (no longer with us)
Array thank you az fencer, you're right on target, and i'm glad you pointed that out for all our youngsters out there. -
Fencing drunk, like fencing when you're tired, excited, or sad, would offer yourself a good lesson at how your mental state affects your sport. Kids shouldn't do it but adults, like Socrates said, "Know thyself". Similar Threads -
