....If memory serves me right, one of the term "defensing" was applied as early as the Tudor era under Henry VIII. when he accredited fencing schools in mid 16th Century England and appointed Masters of "Defencing" using this term rather than the term "Fencing" as we now know it. Darned if I can remember where I read it though.... might have been in an article about Renaissance/Reformation England a few years ago. Anyway, that was one of the sources of the word, and it did include other martial arts as well. Hope this is helpful.
