| Fencing in another show OK.. so its Thursday night after the end of a Looonnggg day, and I'm sitting in front of the boob tube flipping channels.
Spike TV -- "Hey! Spring of Triva!" and there's a guy in whites with a mask and weapon saluting the screen. Almost drop my drink..
Don't ask -- I gather this an overdubbed Japanese Trivia show, where people write in with trivia questions, and then the show puts together video segments on the answers. This is complete with bad dubbing, strange characters in the show, and low production values.
In this case, it looks like "who would win, Kendo or Fencing?" The segment on TV showed that they had to modify the masks a bit, agreed upon specific target areas, and put a Saber fencer against a Kendo fencer. A little internet research shows you can see the video at http://www.spiketv.com/shows/series/...isode_9.jhtml#
FYI -- the Saber guy took the Kendo, with a low flank cut. |

| That was so stupid. Why don't they compare bicycling with volleyball or something.

| Reminds me of the "Animal Faceoff" show on (I believe) Animal Planet, wherein two teams with waaaay too much time on their hands build models to determine which of two predators would win a fight. In Bear vs. Crocodile--bet on the bear.
About on a par with the people who obsess over whether Wolverine could defeat The Green Goblin.

| Just watched it....oh dear God....yay for the sabre fencer, but the bad dubbing and typical Japanese over top top production reminds me of the Iron Chef! |

| Does anyone think it would have been the slightest bit more interesting if an epee fencer was involved?

| Actually, if you think saber and foil ROW is bad, imaging adding proper form before, during, and after the cut, calling out the location of the cut in correct fashion (in japanese), and demonstrating proper energetic focus during and after the attack.
It's small wonder the saber guy lit him up.
Sean
(who dabbled in Kendo until he was told he could bout after a year of kata... then went back to epee...) |

| yeah my friend has told me about this. I have also seen kendo on my computer and that "bout" or whatever you call it had a lof of times when they were locked together because if they moved, they could get a touch.
I'm glad I don't have to yell out MEN! (word for a head attack in Kendo) everytime I fence sabre.

| It was kinda innacurate. On top of the fact that it was one touch, the kendoist seemed to be unable to parry 8. (I don't know the sabre number, that's foil/epee. Right under the right arm, in other words.) Also, the kendoist would usually have a strength advantage, but I'm not sure that bamboo would reflect that accurately.
But it was still cool, 'cuz fencing won. |
