Being female, someone would have to hit me pretty hard for me to feel it in my "nards". However, I've always liked this picture:

the whole cup issue aside, I've found that there is something worse than just getting "hit" in the nards... one of my buddies is a master of the "scrotum-stretcher thrust". INFINITELY more painful, I can assure you.

yeah, arcon, it'll prolly happen eventually. Depends who/where you fence, and on your luck. There used to be a guy at my club called Silva the Castrator. He was well aware that the groin was valid foil target, and he took advantage of it.

A story my coach told me . .
A guy was training in epee, and wasn't wearing proper pants, leaving a gap between the jacket and the pants. His opponent put his sword down his pants . . . came up with blood . . . luckily, no permanent damage was done.

I've found that women seem to be the worst offenders for stinging the genital area with their blades.

One girl in particular who used to fence in my club specialled in running her blade between your legs and smacking the hilt into the goolies. She did this to me three times. I don't wear a box, but I have been practising the Sumo technique of withdrawal.

wullie... I think you have something there. The only close calls ive had near the sensitive area have taken place while fencing women. hmmmmmmmmmmmm do you think it could be a case of ----- envi?......naaaaaaaa.

Absolutely it is valid foil target so if you don't protect it, ummmmm, whose fault is that, exactly?

There's a reason us girls have to wear breast protectors. Aside from the fact that repeated injuries to that area will result in permanent damage, it hurts like hell to get hit there with a pointy object.

So the next time, guys, that you decide getting hit in the nuts without protection is necessary, take a cat o'nine tails and flail it between your legs a few hundred times. If you still feel protection is unnecessary, then you can bring your unworn cup to me. I'll be the first to buy you the biggest drink on the planet. (That is, after the trip to the emergency room and your subsequent two-week vacation on a floor with doors that only open one way....)

Get the point, fellas.

Well,

Seeing that Sumo is basically just a big wedgie contest, most of the wrestlers learn how to pull their testicles into their body.

I'm not sure how quickly they can do it, or if they can selectively choose left or right (which would set up some great party tricks), but it seems to me a very sensible thing to do in the circumstances.
