A proposition to you statistics lovers: consistency of success

I'd be interested in finding out which of the 6 weapon groups (2 genders X 3 weapons) fluctuate the least with respect to their top fencers in FIE rankings.

In other words, for example, which weapon group's top 10 or so has changed the least throughout a period of 5 years?

It would probably be pretty difficult or tedious to acquire and compile the data, but I think it's something interesting that could offer insight as to the international development of each weapon group and perhaps the nature of the weapon itself.

The last four years are available here:

There are various things you could do. An initial thought might be to compare (something like Spearman's rank correlation) year to year. Or perhaps do the same between ranking and the results of individual competions. Or...

Before you start you need a fairly strong idea of what your theoretical standpoint is and exactly what questions you wish to answer.

Without doing any statistics, I think I can answer your question:

Women's foil is the most consistent weapon. This is the one where the hierarchy has changed the least in the 5 years.
