| Unfortunately as it stands now lodging is on your own L We have found that this works best. We pay a little more and cover some travel expenses and leave the lodging up to the ref.
There is such a wide rang of lodging options in New Orleans and it is not possible to please everyone. The Hilton Riverside where the event is being held has a rate that looks more like the national debt than a hotel rate. There are literally hundreds of hotels in the downtown/French quarter area and just as many within a 15 min drive.
We are in the process of compiling a list of hotels with good rates.
Please feel free to contact me or any of the CCO host committee if you have questions.

| I'd love to come, but $50 won't quite get me there from Seattle. It'd be a blast I bet, but you know how pocketbook issues can be....
Good luck with the event!

R | Are you kidding? I'm a three, and with this pay scale, I wouldn't break even on the weekend even if you threw in a place to stay (and that's not counting lost wages)!
Given that it's New Orleans, breaking even would probably be good enough, but with this pay scale I think you're gonna have a lot of trouble finding refs from anywhere outside the immediate viciinity.

| I feel your pain. I completely agree, Referees should be paid more. If we could pay more we would but we just don't have the budget to pay more. Our goal every year is to not lose money. Some years we make a little some years we lose. We are trying to pay more than most of the other tournaments in the region.
Trust me if there was more money we would pay more.
Cheers

R | It really is an unfortunate problem. I think we all understand and sympathize with you, knowing you don't want to lose money and you want to run a good tournament. However, you have the obvious problem that as much as some referees would like to help you, they can't make the financial sacrifice for your competition. Only solutions seem to be to create more money or more referees (local ones). |

| Clubs don't seem to understand that the FOC will provide a weekend of training and testing for a reasonable fee. Even a little division like ours got seven new rated referees in 2004 with a little planning.
Of course, then you have the problem of your newly rated referees also being your better fencers and wanting to compete. Oh well, back to directing from the pools *sigh*, but at least the refereeing is good. |

| In my area (which happens to be close to New Orleans), it's rare to find a tournament that pays referees anything. Most refs are volunteer status only. SO, I would say that it's pretty competitive in that aspect. This isn't California or Mass. where you find clubs on every corner.

| We have tried paying something similar to New Orleans as well and no takers. That wasn't the case about three years ago.
Ironically, it seems to be because the sport is growing. Now that there are a lot more decent tournaments going on in the region, there just aren't enough referees to go around. So, we trained our own. That's the way it should work.
Rolls, we plan to have another referee training weekend in 2005. You need to bring a bunch up for the weekend. We can probably find you a place to stay too. Quote: |

I would like to make, and I'm sure some of my clubmates would too.
