Unoffically, the Harvey Mudd school colors were always known as "Infrared and Ultraviolet" since no one every saw the colors until they graduated.. (HMC is a small science & engineering college, part of the Claremont Colleges group).
I was surprised at the consortium statement too, I didn't go searching expecting it: "Claremont-Mudd-Scripps teams are comprised of student-athletes from Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College and Scripps College." Each of the colleges may have their own identity, but have agreed to share for the purpose of athletics in order to be able to field anything of a good team.
Here's the link to where I got the statement: http://www.hmc.edu/student.html

This is becoming a digression, so I'll end my thread here after this. The Clarement Union team isn't new -- and yes, it was because the schools are so small (Harvey Mudd for example is only about 600 students), and they need to combine to have the population base to field a competitive team.

Back when I was a student at HMC, fencing wasn't offered as an option -- I didn't pick up fencing until after I graduated, and after graduate school as well. I *believe* it's strictly a club sport in Claremont, which certainly fits in that they are only sending an Epee team.

FYI -- the *only* place I've seen the HMC colors is at http://www.hmc.edu/org/sailing/index.html which shows the sailboat from the college sailing club with school colors of Black and Gold...

Funny, I thought the Gold Rush (and resultant mass migrations) were in 1849.

Unfortuantely, no. The varsity team is fencing at Northwestern that weekend so I'll be in Chicago with them. With the schedule conflicts between the two teams it looks like the only club meet that I'll be able to go to is club nationals in April.

I'll be out to CA for Sacramento in July. Probably reffing 8 days and only fencing D1 and D1A sabre, so hopefully less sitting around time. :)

Yes, but Long Beach State was 100 years later and that is how the name 49'r became the mascot of the team and the colors. Brown for the dirt that the Yellow Gold came out of.

It is interesting that the colors were changed to Black and Yellow; because of the last football coach didn't like Brown and Yellow. The changing of the colors was one of his conditions for being hired. Along with a car and chauffeur.
