What does the exam give you if you pass it?

a clinic? cool! they are finally putting those refs where they belong. hopefully after lots of treatment and drug therapy they will be fit to re-release into society.

Oh, snap -- I get it. A clinic can also be a medical facility. How did you get so clever, you?

I don't know the rules exactly, but I believe if you pass the test you have at least a 10 (the lowest rating). Then your performance as a referee while being observed determines the rating you get. I don't believe you can get higher than a 6 at this kind of seminar, and unless the competition is of a higher caliber than expected, you shouldn't expect a 6 either. The information on becoming a referee is at http://www.fencingofficials.org/Ratings/index.html

Oh, so this is just for USFA, right? That world class stuff confused me in my tired state.

Sorry -- I just cut-and-pasted the text of the original announcement (it was postponed from November because of the death of Christian Vidosa) because I noticed it hadn't been re-announced.

I hope people come. I'm looking forward to fencing in a tournament I don't have to self-referee! And it will give me good (and badly-needed) practice in looking saintly about bizarre calls.
