| I've flown at least three times a year for the past three years with a large Uhlmann roller bag. All of my equipment has shown up in good shape; however the bag itself is certainly less durable than the cheaper, hard-sided golf bags. I've never had my bag go astray, but have been with other fencers whose bags did not arrive in time for the competition. Early on, a veteran of the World Cup circuit advised me to carry on everything except my weapons: shoes, uniform, mask, glove, body cords. If the bag goes astray I'll be able to beg or borrow a weapon - or worst case scenario, buy one. I usually pack all my clothes for a weekend fencing competition in my fencing bag. On the way home, my sweaty, smelly fencing uniform goes in my checked fencing bag and my clothes go into my carry-on.
And I disagree with Edew about leaving your tools behind. When I arrive (usually the night before the competition), I like to check to make sure my weapons will pass, and will tinker with them if necessary. And I'm not chummy enough with the armourers to be able to persuade them to stop by my hotel room . . .

| Beer usually does it for them. Two bottles and they're putty in your hands. Especially the cute beginner ones.

| My coach is charging $340 Canadian for an Uhlmann fencing bag with two main zip compartments, side pockets and mesh elastic compartments on the end of the bag. Anyone know if this is a normal price? |

| My Uhlmann roller bag was brillant. Its now gone to a deserving junior down here, so I can break in my brand spanking new, custom made leather and canvas bag with seperate weapon compartments and both carry and backpack straps. (Yes I will post pictures when my digital starts working again)

| Can you believe the TSA disconected wiring to body cords on our last flight! They will mark the case as having been opened so just double check your connections so your not handed a card on the strip for faulty equipment. Please also don't make any comments like " My equipment won't go off if you fiddle with the wires"...they aren't the brightest squirrels and WILL take apart EVERYTHING! Try to get your equipment hand inspected at check-in with you being present and then have them wrap their TSA inspected tape around your entire case. It doesn't mean they won't open it again but it has helped. Definetly carry on your uniform. |

| Do they even have time to disconnect body cords? It's not a simple matter in most cases. I must believe that there must be hundreds of other bags that must be inspected.

Of course it should be detected at the latest at the armorer's table, so still not where someone would be getting carded...
