Sports Education

I started working at a local university, United States Sports Academy, about two months ago. When I got the job, I was quite surprised because they offer quite a few degrees that I thought would be benefitial to fencers.

First, they only offer sport-specific courses. They have a doctoral program, master's program and have recently added an upper-level bachelor's program.

The doctoral program has majors in sports management and sports medicine.
The master's program has majors in sports management, sports coaching, sports medicine, sports studies, and fitness managemnt.
The bachelor's program consists of the last two years (60 semester hours) of your undergraduate degree. It has majors similar to the master's program.

The university is acrredited through SACS.

Anyway, I thought some of you may be interested. Some of the courses I found paticularly interesting were:

Sports Coaching: Organization and Management in Sports, Psychology of Sports, Sports Coaching Methodology, Scientific Principles of Coaching, Applied Sports Performance Analysis, Sports Medicine, Sports Nutrition, Sports Strength and Conditioning

Sports Management: Fund Raising in Sports, Sports Promotion and Event Planning, Sports Facilities Management

Also, they offer almost all of their classes online (one exception is the doctoral program).

Rolls.

Huh!

Great lead. This is something I could really use. Online, accredited, and related to my interests. The stumper is $400/course hour, or $13k for a degree. But, it's got me thinking.

Price is always an issue with college. At least, these days it is. USSA is a private istitution, but they have a full range of financial aid options.

I think this type of education would be particularly valuable for salle owners or those who want to open a salle.

Sports Nutrition would be something valuable for every fencer to be educated on. If you are in college now and have the chance to take a Sports Nutrition class as an elective, go ahead and take it. There is so much information in a course like this that can be applied to fencing. I took one in highschool and even on a highschool level it was information that I could use. I plan on taking the basic Sports Nutrition course offered at my school in the fall semester.

If you don't have these opportunities there are lots of books on Sports Nutrition. My coach suggested a book that is really, really great; Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook. The 2nd edition has all the information that the 1st has and then some.

So what makes it any less "real" than sitting in a class and taking notes? Do you not believe in taking online courses for "real" schools either?

Can you attend coaching academies these days, like maybe in France or Italy, where you go in, and come out with a professional maestro's diploma or whatever?

Sigh. In detail then:

The school is a real school.
The school offers real degrees.
The school's complete program costs $13,000.
The degrees help to make a living in the real world.

I mean, sheesh. Were the earlier four posts so jaw-droppingly complicated you were unable to understand? If you don't have a clue, it's not really an opinion.

Just so you know, the United States Sports Academy is accredited by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools). You can read the accreditation statement here http://www.ussa.edu/accredited-college.asp

For more information on SACS, visit http://www.sacs.org

This is the same organization that approves pretty much all colleges in southeast US including some very well known institutions. And yes, they do approve online education, but USSA doesn't just offer online classes. They also have traditional, residential online classes too.

To give O_O #2 the benefit of the doubt, I SERIOUSLY doubt he read anything besides "online classes". Otherwise, I can not understand why he would make such uniformed remarks.
