NJ Fencers: Is the Cetrulo Tournament this weekend have a website? My trainer wants to come watch, or perhaps judge at the Cetrulo Tournament, but no matter where I look I cannot find a site for them. I've spent the past two hours looking for the website, or high schools sites with information, and finally joined here to ask if anyone know where to find a phone number. Thanks for your help. -

Array MKFencer, you're right, you can't find it anywhere. The NJIFA site has not been updated since the end of last season, the NJ Division of the USFA doesn't keep track of it because it is scholastic not USFA, and the NJSIAA has no info on it either. The team coaches (or most of them anyway) get the information from emails from the NJIFA and then let the fencers and parents know in their own good time. For future questions, your best bet is to post an inquiry on the NJ Division's message board, but this worked just as well.
The Cetrulo and the Santelli qualifiers are this Sunday, 1/9, at Voorhees High School. The top 18 teams from last year get a bye into the actual tournament so the qualifiers are for the other 18? or so teams remaining. The top 6 or 8 teams (I'm not sure of the number because the NJIFA has changed the rules a few times in the past months) from the qualifier will qualify for the actual tournaments.
The Cetrulo is on 1/23 and the Santelli is on 1/30. I believe they will also be held at Voorhees HS. Qualified referees are needed for all events and they can contact Sue Tracey or Irena Petsche. Note that the date for the Denise O'Conner Girls' High School Championship was changed to accomodate the Santelli so that girls could fence both.
Good luck & GO 'VILLE!

Thanks very much for the names. Hopefully now he can help out by judging. I am EMailing him right now. -
NJ High School Tournaments They broke the tournament up into two parts because of how many schools now fence in NJ (over 40). Anyone who wants to officiate at the qualifiers this weekend can contact Sue Tracey get-the-point@comcast.net. The officials need to be at Voorhees High School at 8:30AM. The date for the Cetrulo is 1/23 and the Santelli is 1/30 all at Voorhees High School. The pay is $85 for officals. -

Array When did the Cetrullo get changed from the 29th to the 23rd? I have been told by several people including board members of the NJ division that the Cetrullo is the 29th and Santelli the 30th (i.e. the reason why the Denise O'Connors are on the 30th for guys and 29th for girls). -

Array This qualifer thing is definetly moving in the right direction. Last year's Cetrulo wasn't that bad, with the DE format, but the previous years (basically a giant pool of 30 or so teams) was a nightmare. By the end of the day you'd be happy to lose and get out of there. No breaks for lunch or anything either. Not to mention that the bus left our school at 6 in the morning to get there on time. I was offered a chance to direct at the qualifier by my old coach, but I politely turned it down. Between the drive out there, and the 8 or 9 hours of standing and directing, you really have to be motivated. But go to the actual tournament if you can, the final rounds are at a very high level and are very exciting to watch.
<- me & my sabre team got 4th last year. -

They changed the venue and the date a few weeks ago because they lost the venue for the 29th (I think it was Drew) and the only other venue available was on the 23rd. I think the new venue is Voorhees, but double check that.

I agree that this year's change is a move in the right direction. It brings back the round robin format that was abandoned last year, but addresses the logistical problems caused by having so many teams.
IMHO, the experiment last year was a failure. The Cetrulo & the Santelli have always been unique because the teams and squads that won could say that they fenced every other team in the state that day, head on, and beat them. It was a better test than States because a strong district, like the old District 1 used to be, would have more top fencers/squads/teams than slots available to move up to the States. Moreover, the format adopted last year encouraged the teams to stack their B & C strips in the pools, but didn't penalize the stacking when they got to the DE's. Under the round robin format, stacking is a way to keep a weak team from coming in last, but for a squad to win a trophy, they have to win 80+% of their bouts, not 60+%. So with the round robin format, a squad that isn't strong on all three strips doesn't come out on top, and a team that doesn't have three strong squads doesn't win the overall trophy.

Andrew Would love to have you come direct saber, even if you can just come during lunch time and fill in for the other directors. -

Array I actually would if I didn't have to work. I'm getting $9 an hour at my job so theres not a huge difference in what i'd make, of course i'd much rather direct but by the time my coach told me it was too late to change my schedule. And the actual Cetrulo (which I had planned to direct at) I have a college meet on that day. Oh well... maybe next year.
hscoach, what school are you from? -
Anyone have the results? I saw them printed out but didn't get a chance for a good look lol Wow, I'm still third top poster... # Posts Per Day: 15.18 -

Array Yea, it's just that the last zombie movie I saw was I Am Legend, so that's still fresh in my mind.
Also equally effective are shotguns, chainsaws and landmines! -

Array I prefer the ol' sledgehammer approach.
Oh, Dead Rising, how I miss thee. The solution to your problem is to fence another weapon. Similar Threads -
