body cord prongs don't fit into foil-help, please-

    Hello All,

I have searched the archives to see if this has been previously discussed and could not find it-sorry if it is redundant.

I just received 3 new, wired foils. they are great blades and I'm happy with them overall (blades, grips, etc.). The problem is that for one foil, the body cord prongs will not go into the foil. One coach said this had happened with an epee of his once and the holes were 'too tight.' One answer was to file the inside till they fit (with some sort of round file?). Another was to give it to our armorer (but he's been out sick for several weeks). Another: to return the blade (I bought it new). What do you think? If I wait for the armorer, it might be too late to return it, if that is his advice. Or-maybe this is no big deal and many fencers have dealt with this before. The prongs just do not slide in at all. Thanks so much for your help.

    Best,

    Aisha

Prieur body cords do not fit well into non-prieur sockets, if that helps.

It happens on occasion, though I find the opposite to be much more common: prongs that fit too loosely into the sockets and make for flickering white lights ( sabre ).

Anyway, the solution is up to you. The one time I encountered that problem I went the file route---used a round "needle" file until the fit was snug but not overly tight.

I'd say just buy a new socket & switch it out. Better yet, call the vendor and tell them about the problem, and maybe they'll send you a new socket for free. Just ask for one that's the same brand as the other two that fit, and/or the same brand as your body cord....

Why bother sending the whole weapon back?

Sounds like a manufacturing problem (especially since the other two appear to be fine).

You could probably fix it with a needle file, but why do extra work if the weapon is brand new? Contact whoever you bought it from and let them make it right.

While I would opt for contacting the vendor in your case, I would probably get a 3mm or 4mm drill or reamer (depending on which hole was too small) and bring the hole up to spec. While filing in probably the quickest and easiest way to make them compatible, it is also one of the most imprecise.

It all boils down to what your hassle factor is.

    Good luck.

Yep. And of course, it's going to cost you in shipping to send it back. Fixing it yourself: priceless.

The supplier could just send you a new socket at his expense and you could still repair the first one and have a 2fer.

    body cord prongs

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

The vendor asked me to return the socket (hmm...so I have to take it off...) and he'll exchange it. I am inexperienced in fix-it biz, but I am willing to learn, and I know it is necessary, so I'm going to mull these options over for a day or so, and re-examine the blade at the salle tonight. I think the vendor's idea is good if I end up not doing it. Thanks again...

You should usually try to get your cord and your socket from the same manufacturer. Of course, there will always be the chance of problems, but it's reduced if the same people are making them.

    body prongs are in!

Many thanks again. I worked on them a bit and they went in!-(and tried the foil out after w/several types of body cords), but not too loose. I know that many of you here are experts at alot more than these small things, but it gives me confidence to try something else!
