| Personal protection for males How many of you actually wear a cup in practice/competition? Shouldn't this be a safety rule? Why isn't it? |

| I don't.
It should.
The FIE hasn't gotten together with the equipment manufacturers to develop a cup concept that would add another $100 to the cost of a fencing outfit?
Regards, MR

| Not only do I wear one in practice and competition, I wear one to work.
Be prepared.

| OH NO! Not this again! Cat, I started one of these threads awhile back after I clocked a guy. (Out of concern of course.) There were some interesting responses. You might want to look for it. It wasn't that long ago.

| I do.
It should be a rule, and I thought it was.(?) But I would wear one regardless.

| As far as it being a rule, I think they figure anyone who doesn't wear one deserves what's coming to them. That said, I never wear a cup and have paid the price a few times, although much less often than I would expect. *knocks on his wooden desk*

| As a parting shot over the back deck (with the ferferent hope that this is the end of this) haven't worn one in 20 years of fencing, probably won't, carry one in my fencing bag just in case. You pays your monies, youse takes your chances.

| Well, I always wear one while fencing. Even though I never fence my wife, she reminds me it is a good idea. Mergs understands and is probably chuckling... |

| Never really thought about this happening myself so I've never worn a cup . Guess it's similar to women having to wear breast protection though it's a lot rarer to get hit in the groin than in the chest. Fortunately, it hasn't happened to me and the few hits there I've seen caused no pain or damage.

| The only time I worn one in competition was the time I got hit there. The nice holes in the cup directed the epee blade right on target <img src="graemlins/evil3.gif" border="0" alt="[Evil 2]" /> . What makes even worse it was my wife that did it. I haven't wore one since.

| Swordsen...I can see it now, "Gentlemen, please show the director your cups"...ROLFL.
Actually don't laugh, if they made it a rule, it would have to be checked. I have had one occasion where the directors checked for chest protectors and underarm protectors.

| When my son played football, they had to weigh in before every game.
As a part of the procedure, each boy had to rap hard on his cup to prove he was wearing one.
If they make it a rule, we could do the same. Save us the trouble of undressing in front of the director...

| That's what they do about breast protectors anyway.

| When someone "catches one in the grapes" at our club, the moans and cries are usually accompanied by a chorus of rapping sounds coming from the loins of smirking épéeists.
