Salem Classical Fencing is very pleased to announce that Maestro Charles
Selberg will be presenting a two-day fencing seminar, "American Fencing:
Past, Present, and Future", on March 12 and 13, 2005 at our salle in
Salem, Oregon. The seminar is appropriate for fencers of all skill
levels in all three weapons (but especially foil and sabre). You will
not want to miss this memorable (and very full) weekend of fencing,
learning, and conversation.
The seminar will encompass more than 16 hours of conversation, drill,
history, theory, anecdotes, and practical instruction from one of the
brightest fencing minds in America. Cost for the seminar is $200 per
person, which includes a T-shirt and a catered lunch on both days. This
will be a major fundraiser for the salle, as Maestro Selberg is very
generously donating his time.

About the Maestro: Charles Selberg has been fencing for more than 50
years. In 1970, he was a member of the three-man team that won America’s
first international fencing gold medal at the World Masters’ Fencing
Championship. He studied under many of the expatriated European masters
in the United States, including Erich Funke, Hans Halberstadt, George
Piller, and Aldo Nadi, as well as American fencing master Jack
Nottingham (who was himself a Nadi protégé). Selberg is also the author
of the textbook "Foil", as well as an extensive collection of
instructional videotapes (carried by American Fencers Supply). Maestro
Selberg developed a very successful fencing program at the University of
California at Santa Cruz during his tenure there in the 1970s. He is now
retired and living in Ashland, Oregon with his wife Julie and an
assortment of dogs, cats, and other wildlife.
About the salle: Salem Classical Fencing opened its salle in May 2004
with 32 paid members. It is the only dedicated fencing salle in the
Willamette Valley, and one of only six dedicated fencing studios in
Oregon -- only three of which are outside of Portland. Since its
opening, membership has grown to more than 70 fencers. SCF has a paid
staff of two instructors (who volunteer much of their time outside of
class), with two additional volunteer staff members to help keep the
salle open. In addition, SCF holds the only regularly scheduled standard
foil tournaments on the West Coast (four in 2004 alone), drawing fencers
from all over the Pacific Northwest. Salem Classical Fencing is a
non-profit tax-exempt corporation (501(c)(3) letter of determination
pending). Proceeds from this seminar will be used for expansion and
improvement of the salle's facilities.
