| Your parents and fencing Did you ever/do you ever want your parents coming along to watch you fence? I know I don't. I have a feeling they'll throw me off. I might invite them to some competitions next year, on the idea I wont look like a crap fencer.

| Having your parents around could actually help, the whole "must look good for audience" thing.
Otherwise my mum hates watching me fence because she could be doing something else and sees it as a waste.
My dad likes to watch fencing but after a 6 hour competition day he usually gets a little bored, especially if I've been eliminated.

| well, they've never actually seen me fence and they probably never will as they live to far away; i've sent them pics though. having them not be there is probably a good thing. i usually do well in hostile environments where everyone is cheering for the other guy..puts pressure ON HIM to perform for his crowd. hehehe |

| My dad used to fence epee for NYU's team in his college days, and he wants to see if I'm as much of a lunatic as his sabre team from back then. Mom never had any involvement with it before I started, but they both have the usual parental interest.
Anyway, I've found that my parents can actually be a big help sometimes. I was bombing BADLY at the junior sectionals last year, mainly because my head wasn't in the game. They took me aside, told me that they weren't going to waste their time coming to see me anymore if I kept pulling that crap, and hit me over the head with a newspaper a few times. Literally. It worked, so I'm not gonna complain.

| I didn't vote because there's no "I don't care" option.
Eh, why not. Picked sometimes.

| Well, my dad is my coach, so it's always good to have him watching.
My mom doesn't really like watching fencing very much, but I don't really mind when she watches. |

| I don't mind if my folks see me fence - they've always been supportive of me, and fencing is something most people don't see every day. |

| My mum actually wanted to see me fence at a little competition a while ago (when i foolishly dabbled in sabre - but I'l admit, sabre is awesome fun!) and I told her no. Lucky that, because I fenced pathetically

| Of course - my dad drives us to competitions! It's great: I clamber out of bed into the car and then, when I wake up, we're at the venue!
When it comes to the fencing though, I'm like Katman, in that it doesn't really bother me if have an audience or not. As long as you beat the guy at the other end of the piste, who cares?! |

| I like having my mother present while I fence, it's not so bad. She's the one with the camera and money (for food and drinks afterwards). |

| yes and no....
My dad was a competetive fencer on the international level in the late 60's early 70's so he makes a preaty tough coach but also, a great critic! |

| I always enjoy having friends, family, girlfriend come watch me fence. It gives me people to talk to while waiting for D.E.s and they usually cheer me on when I am fencing. I never let those same people distract me during my bouts either.

| I like having my daughter watch me fence, because she gives me good advice, but she usually gets bored and wanders off to talk to her friends because she's an epeeist and I'm a sabre fencer.

| My Mom and Dad haven't seen me fence yet, but I wouldn't mind. Of course, Dad's 80 and Mom is 79. I'm 52. I need to get my Mom one of those "My Little Boy Is A Fencer" T-shirts. As far as they're concerned, this is just another one of those wacky things I've gotten into.
