| A story, possibly apocryphal.
Long ago, a student of Ralph Faulkner was fencing epee when his opponent's blade snapped and went into his chest, narrowly missing piercing his lung. As he lay on the piste bleeding and in pain, the maestro walked up, looked down at him and said "That wouldn't have happened if you'd parried".
( Lest anyone object to this as an impertinent slur against Mr. Faulkner, it's the student in question who related the anecdote. And he idolized the man... )
The moral: parry! |

Moral 1: learn to parry.
Moral 2: coaches are evil. Quote: |

1) Revenge. It's not big, it's not clever, but still it makes you feel good
2) Just tell him. Something like: "Look mate, I can't feel my hand anymore. You do those flicks all the time and although they rarely score, they always manage to cause unbearable, excruciating agony. Is there any chance you could calm it down a bit, please..?"
If Option 2 fails, either try it again, or go for Option 1 !
Best of luck

| Hey, guys. Let me add a little clarity to this discussion as I am the guy that messed up Torg's hand earlier this week.
First, to my knowledge, this is the first time I have hurt somebody at our club. Torg, I am sorry I injured your hand. It was unintentional and I'm sure you will get me back for it some day
Second, I am not a chronic flicker who doesn't know what he's doing. This assumption was immediately made by several of the board's members. I almost never flick in epee. I am a foilist by trade and I'd say 80% of my shots in epee are made to the body, 95% with straight thrusts. In short, you don't know me, you haven't fenced me, so by all accounts you should probably just shut the hell up. Torg merely asked what would happen if something like this went down in a tournament. That's a good question and it was well answered.
My last point is meant for those of you who have forgotten that fencing is a sport that involves contact, blades, and at times, injury. If you are one of those "classical" fencers who thinks that this sport should never hurt, please go find a local girlscout club to fence at. When you are done prancing around like a nymph complaining about "flickers," maybe they will bake you some cookies.
I love this sport, I just don't like all of the whimps who practice it (Torg, this does not include you).

-Tad | first of all, i know it wasn't intentional, tad, you were one of the few who understood the true meaning of my post. i don't blame you, i was just setting the stage and wondering the protocol for a tournament.
furthermore, although i could just barely feel my hand for the next 5 minutes, the swelling's gone down a lot. made me stop for the night, but nothing serious.
and fifth, for all you holy grail fans, it's only a flesh wound, and i've definitely had worse!

| A competition I was in, first Sunday of December, the first DE, my should er went out of the socket. It was my weapon arm, I fell down and rolled onto it instinctively, it popped back in. I got back up, and, wit h the weakest arm ever, lol, I won and placed 3rd, albeit with a huge ice pack on my shoulder/torso by the end of it. But only because I knew my limits. At the last round I was in i forfeited, no use in losing fencinf forever for a one time glory run. Above all, be safe and have fun, if either of those two are in question, then stop for the day. |

(The main reason for posting this was so I could have "Posts: 300."
