The 'f' Test

Read the sentence below:

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE-
SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIF-
IC STUDY COMBINED WITH
THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS.

Now count the F's in that sentence. Count them only once.

Now when you are done... scroll down for the answer!

ANSWER:

There are six F's in the sentence.

A person of average intelligence finds three of them.
If you spotted four, you're above average.
If you got five, you can turn your nose at most anybody.
If you caught six, you are a genius.

There is no catch. Many people forget the "OF"'s.
The human brain tends to see them as V's and not F's.

Why is it anything to do with intelligence if the human brain is wired to forget the Fs in the OFs?

If a person's intelligence meant they got four, then why wouldn't the brain process that allowed them to get one of the OF Fs, also allow that person to get the others?

Where's this test from?

I've heard of it before in many places. "Intelligence", anyway, is nearly impossible to test or quantify because it can mean so many different things.

Because, according the test, people of above average intelligence would see it anyway, i guess
Its the same kinda question you'd get in an IQ test,

I got all six too, and I'm dyslexic (or more correctly, I have a specific learning difficulty related to speed of processing, and with reading difficulties strongly consistent with those people identified as being dyslexic - not to be verbose about it.)

The catch: I've seen it before, and remembered it just enough to count all of them. I dont remember what I got last time, probably three, lol. In any case I know I'm smart, got a nice long ed. psych. report that says so.

I got six, but only because I've seen this before. The first time I did it I got 5.

If you're having problems finding all the "f"s, try separating the words from the sentences. That is, to block out the rest of the sentence and focus on each individual word at a time. You can do this by pointing at each word with your finger, or by blocking out all the other words except one that you focus on. If you do this, you should see each word, and find each "f".

The reason this might work better, is that like a well-trained reader you are recognizing words by their shape and your mental picture of the word, not by the letters in each word. And in the context of a sentence, you will concentrate on the sentence, not the words, or letters within each word. So you need to block out the sentence, and look at each word separately.

I found 5 the first pass, and the 6th when I went back through via this method.

Try a proof reading trick that's handy for spelling errors: read the text from the end to the beginning (i.e. read the last word first). This helps make you read each word as it appears on the screen, not as the word your brain may have already decided it will appear.
