I haven't had a sabre checked since Nationals in 1987. Nor have I so much as seen a box for testing size of bell or a rig for checking bend since then.

Mike by doing what you suggest using the machine and weight and sims on the strip to check your weapon you are holding up the next bout therefore slowing down the pool therefore slowing down the seeding for the next round. Can you imagine if every fencer does that after each bout. You should have you own test box at the strip as well as weight and sims.

I just check my weapons on the strip before the tournament has started... it's so much more reliable than using one of those little testing devices...

They checked our sabres for bend (if they weren't marked S2000) at one Peabody World Cup a couple of years ago when they had just started requiring them.

Most high level epeeists check their weapons using the ref's shims before they unhook after a bout. A good number of top foilists check their springs before unhooking as well. It doesn't slow anything down.
I can usually place the small shim into an epee depress the tip, or throw the foil weight up and wait for the light to go off long before my disconcerted opponant stops crying. I then unhook and if the next fencer is present hook him up to speed things up even more.

Whether I am fencing or refereeing, my pool is usually one of the first ones done.

In short, a fencer competent enough to test his equipment frequently will not slow the compettion down, but one who doesn't think it's important to test his gear will add hours.

Test your equipment or pay the price. Cards and long days.

Styder, there is a referee out there now that is giving yellow cards for delay of bout if the fencer check his or hers equipememnt after a bout. I don't who it's . But my wife saw him do it at Plam Springs. I was just give you a hard time. When I fence epee I did the same thing.

No doubt there is some idiot out there who will give a card for anything at all. As proved by Mr. Andy Shaw during the brief but embarrassing "Socks episode."

If you haven't heard this one:

To prove a point about rules not being enforced Mr. Shaw pointed out that the rules require socks that stay up thoughout competition. So every time your socks fall down they are penalized as any other first group offense would be. Yellow card for the first sock, red card for the second sock and confiscation of the non-conforming equipment until the end of the bout.

In fact he did not confiscate the equipment, he merely gave two cards to a fencer before the beginning of the bout for presenting himself to fence with non-regulation equipment. Then he was quickly forced to black card the fencers coach for his reaction.

He is a bit of a nut, but you cannot fault his logic or the validity of the cards given.

I don't compete yet so I don't do any of that stuff but there's a guy in my club who has all the weights and everything. It seems to have saved quite a few members at tourneys since we have a lot of blade problems sometimes!

PS: Tell that ref that you cannot delay a bout that is over. Also, you cannot give a yellow card to anyone but the fencer, and since his bout was over, he was officially only a spectator and all he could get is a red card for disturbing order off the strip.

Hey all I was saying that there is a referee doing it. I us to check my epee after every bout myself when I fence. But you need to know how to do it in a fast and orderly matter has not to hold up the next bout.

In my experience bouts are held up by two things:
    1) Second call, Mr. Smith... Does anyone know where Smith is. Occationally at the local level: fine, anyone mind if we skip Smith x Jones and get back to that bout later?
    2) Jiggle, Beep, Jiggle, Beep. (explative deleted) Next weapon.

I dont see testing after the bout as a significant delay, especially in De bouts where the ref often has to send a runner to the bout committie to submit and get anothr set of fencers.

So if you were to confiscate a guy's socks do you then give him ANOTHER card for not wearing socks on the strip? Or for not having brought a "back-up" pair with him?

    Too wierd.
