Oo! Oo! I know! It's because if they were rectangular or whatnot there would be an angle at which they could fall through the hole...circles don't have any narrower way to put them. This mathematician figured out a whole bunch of other shapes that would work, there's some formula for making them...I think it's an odd-number-sided shape with a sort of curve connecting the points...
