Personally, I've used the same pair of Timberland boots for all my fencing in the past two years, and besides a general state of disrepair they are still in working order. Indeed, I would still be using them if I had not been gifted some new Adidas hi-tops for Santamas. Using them for long periods has never really given me any problems either, aside from some disparaging glances from other fencers.

My point is simply that beyond all technology involved, a well-fitting pair of shoes and some form of ankle support will serve better than a good looking pair that you're not comfortable in. If they work for you and don't mess up the piste, then it's all peace and love, savvy?

here's something that works for me and makes sense: basketball shoes! at least in minnesota, fencing is done on wood floors, laminated like a gym floor. both sports require fast movements and good grip on the same type of floor. i like them! i've got some addidas, not sure what model, but it's white on the sides with a black stripe an inch wide down the center.

Tae Kwon Do shoes work great. And they are made by Adidas too. I've been wearingthem for the last few months. Lightest shoes I hever ever worn. Feel like I'm gliding.

    Marginally.

Notice how sports (think bball and volleyball) that have a high risk of ankle injuries don't use hi tops? They use mid-cut shoes since the late 80's. Ankle support comes from just below the ankle. Studies have shown all a higher cut shoe does is "remind" the brain to keep the ankle in line. They do nothing physically to prevent injury, nor do they physically add any extra support. That's why the high risk sports started using mid-cut shoes. Better mobility, yet all the protection.

That said, considering that hi-top fencing shoes run much more than the low tops, if you're worried about ankles, it makes more sense to invest in either a brace (of the appropiate level from elastic to rigid plastic), or athletic tape.

All the above solutions are cheaper that fencing hi-tops, or provide more support, or both.

In fact New Balance actually makes a sock that provides more ankle support than hi-tops.

That's why when I first mentioned hi-tops (fencing specific), I originally posted:
They provide so little benefit, that their not worth the money.

The problem with TKD shoes is that they are designed with a little top padding and no heal support. I practice TKD and can tell you that at no time am I ever on my heals. I am always on my toes. So, unless you fence on your toes, I think that those shoes are a bad idea.

I use the new Adistars and they work very well. One poster summed it up. Shoes wear out, and you must replace them eventually.

    Another Shoe Heard ...

... I use squash shoes (Head). They'll usually run you around 70+. They're made for pronation, supination, and in squash there are a lot of similar motions (quick steps forward, backward; lunges). I'd love to get the Darts, but I'm getting over the sticker shock.

Yes, they are. I assume that BG had some backup stock of I's, but didn't have your size. Or they just messed up...

That's a pretty good mess-up in my opinion.
