| I've used pistol grips ever since I took up fencing but am now trying to learn to fence with the french grip. Tricky-tricky!

| Wouldn't the Italian be better if you're gonna go down that road? Can you pommel with the Italian? |

| Pistol grip for me, then again I'm a foilist so there's no advantage in any other grip.

| French, Pistol, Italian, And Sabre, depending on the bout and the circumstances. Yeah, I'm crazy.

| I did the same. The French grip is great for learning to use your fingers for point control, but when your a foilist you can't beat a pistol grip.

| I think that here in Sweden we usually teach beginners to fence with the pistolgrip. (Goes for both foil and épée.) Usually the fencer him/herself initiates the transition.

| I used to hacksaw my Belgian longs until the "pommel" was less than an inch and allowed a full bending of the wrist from any angle.
I now fence with full length Belgian longs. I don't have particularly large hands, so the Belgians allow me to grip the foil loosely and comfortably. Of course, that's not to say that there wouldn't be a better fit out there for me.
I've always thought of getting a piece of board and starting a grip display. With all the choices out there, it would be an expensive endeavor though.

My coach always used to start beginners off with French grips, which is what we do at our club courses, and then they make their own decision once they feel they've mastered the basics... |

| So which pistol grips weork best for those with gargantuan hands? The biggest visconti I could find was too small and a belgian long works ok for me. I was interested in trying something other than a french grip, but have yet to find a truely comfortable pistog grip. Any ideas? |

Some popular grips for people with very large hands are the Russian and Zivkovic B and Z grips. Also keep in mind that all grips are not the same even if they are the same "type". Triplette makes some very large Belgian and American grips as well as a pretty large Russian. All the Blue Guantlet grips I have tried on the other hand tend to run smaller than the Uhlmann or most other kinds. The best thing to do is go to Summer Nationals or a large NAC and try out the differant grips that are around, but that is not always a good option for folks.

| Gave up on the Belgian a couple of years back. Can't work the flick properly, particularly inside. Switched to visconti. (Note there a lots of "pistol" grips.) |

Any ideas? | I have large hands and find the PBT type "A" or "Hungarian" grip to be very comfortable. It's a bit chunkier than the belgian or visconti. Also the area where you place your thumb and forefinger " feels" more like a French than do the others, which I like. The very best thing though is to go to a competition with several vendors and try them out. There are so many options, and it's a very personal thing.
