fencing photos How come fencing photos often have a black background, like the one at the top of this page? Is it a big black curtain? Is it digital editing? -
In the case of the picture above, I beleive that the audience was not lit as much as the strip, causing the background to appear nearly black. -

Array I most finals, the background is draped with black cloth, to allow people (and the ref) to see the blades more clearly.
Sometimes, as biggs pointed out, the stage is very brightly lit and the audience is in the dark, thus giving the same effect. - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)

Array Also, they are taken with a flash to freeze the action. A camera-mounted flash is poweful enough to light the foreground, but not the background. Chiswick, fresh horses!
