| I had a blind fencer at my club. He fenced Epee. Basically, to fence him you had to be blindfolded and then you would plug in your bodywires and change ends of the piste. You then hold onto the spool cable as a kind of guide wire. The basic tactic is to engage your opponents blade and work out their location from that. It was great fun and he was excellent. In particular he could remain in a straight line, my footwork tended to take me rapidly of the piste. Furthermore, my balance went to pieces when I was blindfolded. We even got television covarage at our club because of it. It still brings a smile to my face remembering my blindfolded coach chasing a worried looking camera-man down the piste.
Obviously you would never do this at a ranking competition, but in a smaller friendly competition it can be an exciting new experience for everyone and a really good laugh. I fenced a wheelchair fencer in one such comp. and it was the best part of the day (I learneing a completely new set of tactics, including the importance of getting the first attack in as you can hit straight from the word go).
