    An Englishman in New York

I'm a London foilist moving to NYC for the love of a fine American woman. I'm trying to find a fencing club which, while not being too snobby, is also reasonably good for lessons but friendly etc. I live in the East Village].

I went to one place (the Metropolitan) I think and had to queue up all night to fence one bout. Three hours for five minutes is not a particulary good economy. Is there anywhere else a bit better than that?

Also do any technical people know how this damn fencing mail works. I tried to set it up on outlook express and it just flashes up password and user not valid - when clearly they work on the web stuff.

Infuriating and a rip off of $20.

There are a number of competitive clubs in New York City. All of them are fine. Unfortunately, if you get into comparing New York clubs, you leave things wide open for an on-line contingent that likes to amuse themselves by posting insulting things about one another. I suggest you do a little research (I think the Metropolitan Division has a list of NYC clubs at http://www.geocities.com/nyfencing/) instead of introducing the topic here. Unless of course you are one of the self-amusers, in which case never mind.

You can ask the Metropolis people if there are nights when things are not as busy. There is also:

    Fencer's Club
    119 West 25th St. 5th Floor
    New York, NY 10001
    (212) 874-9800

    New York Athletic Club
180 Central Park South - Please use 58th Street Entrance
    New York, NY 10019
    (212) 247-5100 (ask for Fencing)
